According to Article One paragraph one, a student at Los Altos High School in San Jose, California, who states is generally a straight-A student, suffered an emotional breakdown while leaving class. The cause of her suffering this breakdown was from receiving a D grade. It would later be found out that she was diagnosed with major depression and ADHD. Her cause of being diagnosed with ADHD and major
depression was from school. She states that she’s been keeping her disorder secret because she felt as though she would be ashamed. She also claims that she’s being pressured to apply to a good college and take advanced placement tests. She feels pressured and left out to the fact that everybody else is focusing on their future. This proves that school and college is affecting a student by giving her anxiety.
According to Article One paragraph nine, due to all the students with mental illness, Palo Alto high school’s district is offering more counseling and has trained teachers in case of students trying to commit suicide. Also, according to article one paragraph fourteen, it states that kids are so anxious and depressed that they don’t want to get out of bed and become agoraphobic, which is afraid to go out in public. A former Aragon High student left his school because he was afraid to attend school. He would then enroll in Haven, a class for students that have fears like his. Mental illness even discourages parents from seeking help for their child. Helen Hsu, a supervisor at the city of Fremont’s Youth and Family Services, says, “I’ve had parents refuse to sign permission for counseling one boy. They were afraid it would negatively affect his college application.” Even mental illnesses are discouraging parents to not seek help for their child because of it possibly affecting their child’s future. Dealing from experience, I too get anxious and pressured at school. Whenever a test or essay or final comes around, it pressures me that I really need to pass it. Also because of the fact that I must maintain good grades to look good for colleges, especially universities. It makes me anxious knowing if I even slack off, it could damage my grade badly and make me anxious that I did not receive the grade I wanted. School really pressures me to my full ability and to look ready for colleges. The main increase in mental illness still has yet to be decided because of numerous reasons. Some people think it’s social media that affects high school student’s mental health, but the big culprit to this is being pressured in school and wanting to get into a good college. There may be even more reasons that are more drastic than school and college that affects a student’s mental health.
