How Does Mercutio Fight In Romeo And Juliet
In act 3 scene 1 of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio is the most important character because he puts the scene in motion once he challenges Tybalt to a duel this causes Romeo to fight Tybalt. After Romeo declines Tybalt’s request to fight, Mercutio intervenes by telling Tybalt, “Oh calm, dishonorable, vile submission!/ Alla stoccata carries it away. [He draws.]” (Act 3 Scene 1 Line 72-73) By drawing his sword, Mercutio is beginning a fight that Romeo managed to avoid; as the fight between Tybalt and Mercutio continues, Mercutio becomes distracted allowing Tybalt to stab him in the chest and kill him. The death of Mercutio leaves Romeo wanting revenge on Tybalt, meaning that the only reason Romeo fights Tybalt is because of Mercutio's

    The characteristics of Mercutio have a significant influence on the events that occurred during Act 3 scene 1. It is evident throughout the scene that Benvolio is the peacekeeper as he see's a way around the brawling, (3.1.1-3) ' I pray thee, good Mercutio, lets retire. The day is hot; the Capulet’s abroad; and if we meet we shall not 'scape a brawl.' Insults were exchanged, but Romeo remembered that Tybalt is his new wife's cousin, so he turned the other cheek. Mercutio found this totally shocking, actually dishonorable, so he offered to fight Tybalt instead. They fought and then Romeo tried to intervene, but Tybalt suddenly stabbed Mercutio. Romeo and Benvolio assumed that Mercutio has not been badly hurt because he started joking about his damage but it was no joke. He was dying. A minute later, he died. Romeo blamed himself for Mercutio's death. So, he decided to man up by challenging Tybalt to a duel. And then finished him by killed Tybalt.     Mercutio is a kinsman to the prince and friend of Romeo. He is neither Montague or Capulet but he stays on the side of the Montague because he is Romeo’s friend. Some of his most famous quotes in the play include; “Ask for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man”, and “A plague a’both your houses! They have made worms’ meat of me.” Mercutio persuades Romeo at the start of the play to go to the Capulet party, which is where Romeo met Juliet in the first place. I don’t think he can blamed for their deaths in this way as he didn’t even know Juliet existed at that point. Later on in the play, Mercutio and Romeo are hanging out together when Tybalt comes up to them, Tybalt then insults Romeo in an attempt to provoke a fight but Romeo responds calmly and it is Mercutio who then fights with Tybalt, in defence of his friend. Romeo tries to stop the fight but in the confusion, Tybalt stabs Mercutio and dies shortly afterwards. Mercutio didn’t need to start a fight with Tybalt as he is not a Montague, he didn’t hold a grudge against him.     Mercutio is a relative of the Prince of Verona, so he is of high status, but he never really shows this. He has a very cocky, arrogant, and funny personality, and is always joking around even in serious times. Though this trait helps to lighten the mood, it also ends up being a negative trait, and his cocky attitude does anything but help him. Tybalt goes looking for Romeo by asking Mercutio if he knows where he is. Mercutio taunts him to fight him instead of Romeo. After Romeo comes and tries to stop the fighting, Mercutio ignores him and starts to fight Tybalt. Because of his arrogance and cockiness, Mercutio ends up stabbed.
