How Does Miss Havisham Change In Great Expectations
Great Expectations was a book that describes a humble orphan that had been in a forge doing the dirty work for most his life, and then he was taken by his Uncle Pumblechook to basically change his life. Charles Dickens’s life was like that of Pip, they both had experienced poverty and both had success at a young age. It was like he had written an autobiography, but had changed some things around. Some things in the novel are confusing, like I’d like to know what happened to make Miss Havisham always wear a wedding dress. It does explain that she is heartbroken and having a mental breakdown, but it doesn’t go into detail about her past. In my opinion she was the most mysterious character in the book. …show more content…
She asked Pip to come over so she could apologize and Pip did save her, so she possibly could have strengthened her bond with him. Estella’s relationship with her was like a puppet and puppet master, but after she survived would that bond between them stay the same or would she be nicer to Estella? Talking about Estella’s relationships with Miss Havisham, I noticed that Miss Havisham had ruined Estella’s chances of love. Miss Havisham felt terrible afterwards, but when Pip entered the picture she acts cold, prude, and claims to have no heart. Pip is obsessed with her and tries to woo her, but fails miserably. It seems like he didn’t care for her well being, and it shows when he calls her a “prize”. I wonder if Estella did feel love for Pip, what would happen? Would she not go through with marrying Drummle? It’s obvious that she hates him, and the only reason she marries him is that it would perplex and hurt those around and close to her. Would she marry Pip or not marry at all? I think that if she developed feelings for him, even if she loved him she wouldn’t go and marry him. She would be new to love and marrying someone who you knew for only a little bit of your whole life would not make

Pip continues to remember his visit and later goes on to detail an even scarier description: a “faded spectre in the chair by the dressing-table glass….” Pip is comparing Miss Havisham to a ghost, seemingly unreal and unrelatable to a mortal human. He has a lack of connection to Miss Havisham, seeing her as something static and unchanging, like an old house or a room, in contrast to how he views himself, dynamic and changing. Next, Pip discusses how he feels the “stopping of the clocks had stopped Time in that mysterious place….” Again, everything around Pip is changing: he’s apprenticed to Joe, it’s his birthday, and Biddy moved in with his family, but Miss Havisham and her property remain the same. Estella’s feelings towards Pip hasn’t changed either, as she is still as cold and distant as she was the first time she met Pip. The strangeness of Miss Havisham and her manor astonishes Pip, and, despite him being dreadfully afraid of them, he still feels himself looking closer and becoming more and more fascinated and obsessed with them. This attraction towards Miss Havisham surfaces later in the novel, when Pip becomes convinced that Miss Havisham has a plan for him and Estella together despite having no evidence of…

Expectations. Having expectations could change one’s life. One can induce change within themselves or it can be influenced by others. This concept is noticeable with Pip, the main character in the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Pip is an orphan boy who lives in Kent, England with his abusive sister, Mrs. Joe, and his sympathetic uncle, Joe Gargery. He searches for value as a person in becoming a gentleman and in earning the love of Estella, an orphan adopted by Miss Havisham, a wealthy spinster. Throughout his journey, Pip matures from having innocence to losing innocence, marking his change in character and expectations. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Pip transforms when he encounters a convict, visits Satis House, and experiences London.…

It is also an important factor to many elements in Great Expectations, such as Pip’s story and character, Estella’s personality and future relationship with Pip, and so on. She does not have the best relationship with men, which stemmed from the man who she was supposed to marry but quickly he took off on their wedding money once he got a hold of her money, and this tore her apart. Based on her experiences, she thought it would be a good idea to raise her adopted daughter, Estella, in seclusion and to have a cold heart that cannot love. She was soon proved wrong, once Estella grew up and became aware of how Miss Havisham was treating her all these years. She also thought it was a good idea to trick Pip into thinking that she was his benefact, making him believe that she plans on having him marry Estella. But, again, was proved wrong, once Pip found out about about her plans. And they were anything but forgiving to Miss Havisham when they found out about what she’s been doing to them for all those years. She feels horrible and guilty for what she’s done, tries to get Pip to forgive her, and is engulfed in flames by a nearby lit fire. She later dies without being able to really redeem herself, like Lady Macbeth. The amount of stress Miss Havisham and Lady Macbeth had to deal with throughout, led them to do a number of things that they immediately…

Dickens’ depiction of young women and girls are identified through characters like Estella and Biddy. Estella, an adopted daughter of Miss Havisham, is extremely wealthy, prideful, ambitious and cold-hearted. Though Estella’s wealth seems to give her everything, she is not satisfied, and even claims that she “she has "no heart… no softness there, no—sympathy—sentiment—... ” (pg.186) Estella is manipulated by Miss Havisham to become the ideal girl for Miss Havisham. She has a very bold and strong character but is trapped within the confinements of Miss Havisham and society. She is regarded as a dark character, luring Pip and others into the Satis House and using him for her and Miss Havisham’s own entertainment. Biddy, who was “brought up by hand” by Mr. Wopsle’s great-aunt, is simple and kind-hearted. “She was not beautiful,—she was common, and could not be like Estella,—but she was pleasant and wholesome and sweet-tempered.” (pg. 107) Biddy and Pip are close in age and are able to get along well, due to the fact that they are both orphans.…
