Art Essay Chris Ofili
In this essay I will be evaluating and discussing Chris Ofili’s collage, “No Women No Cry” made in 1998.
I believe that this is an abstract collage. It is quite obvious that the focal point in this collage is the Nigerian women in the middle of the canvas. The background looks as if she is standing in front of a Nigerian traditional net. This gives us further evidence that she is Nigerian. The women’s clothes are torn; this tells us that she is poor and that she is hard working. The tears that are dropping from her eyes represent that she in pain emotionally or physically. All of this information tells the audience in-directly that many people have been racist to her making her feel bad about herself. Chris is trying to show the audience the women’s culture and her identity by using ragged clothing, colour jewellery etc.
This collage makes me upset. The collage reminds me of racism and discrimination, and all of the brutality that black Africans had to live through for majority of their lives. Chris’s choice of colours attracts the audience to do further research about the collage.
Chris combined acrylic paint, oil paint, polyester resin, paper collage and map pins to create his collage. He blends in the acrylic paint with the oil paint to create the background. The bright orange in the background outlines the women, making it easier for the audience to identify the focal point of the collage. The light orange also reminds the audience about tradition. The concrete like colour on the side of the collage fades into light orange into the middle. Neyaz Choudhury year10 G4
