Propaganda is the manipulation of facts and feelings. Throughout the book, Napoleon used propaganda to trick the other farm animals. “Snowball was in league with Jones from the very start!”(Doc D, excerpt 3) By spreading false facts about Snowball, a pig that did not agree with Napoleon’s ways, the animals are convinced that snowball was against them even though he just wanted to help everyone. Napoleon also used propaganda to paint himself as a hero. “ ‘And do you not remember, too, that it was just at that moment, when panic was spreading and all seemed lost, that Comrade Napoleon sprang forward with a cry of ‘Death to Humanity!’ and sank his teeth in Jones’s leg? Surely you remember that, comrades?’ exclaimed Squealer, frisking from side to side.” (Doc E, excerpt 1) Squealer painted Napoleon as a hero and acted as if all those events actually happened. He over exaggerated everything to make it seem like everything really happened that way. Napoleon demanded that everyone call him “our leader”and adopted other names such as, “Father of All Animals, Terror of Mankind, Protector of the Sheep-Fold…” By using these names, taking credit for everyday things, and being displayed as a hero, the animals were tricked into believing Napoleon knew what was best for the them and allowed him to stay in…
The author uses few details to describe the narrator and does not explain the reason the narrator is being hung, to create a feeling of suspense in “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” For example, Bierce states, “Evidently this was no vulgar assassin. The liberal military code makes provision for hanging many kinds of persons, and gentlemen are not excluded.” (Page 2) This quote demonstrates the lack of detail the author used to describe the narrator in the beginning of the story, which helps create and suspenseful mood throughout the text. By not including many descriptive details, the reader is clueless as to why Farquhar is being hung making him a sympathetic character, who is awaiting an undeserved fate. This helps to create suspense because…
The first rhetorical device that the pigs use to try and persuade the other animals is pathos. Pathos is the emotional appeal. One way pathos is used in Animal Farm is when Boxer states, “I do not believe that snowball was a traitor at the beginning” he said finally. “What he has done since is different.” (73) This quote is pathos because it shows the emotional appeal how snowball is not a traitor at the beginning, but then they say how he turns his back and is now. The animals say, “I do not believe that,” he said. “Snowball fought bravely at the cowshed. I saw him myself. Did we not give him ‘Animal Hero, First class,’ I’m mediately afterwards?”(72) When the animals are having an emotional opinion, the pigs are coming in and changing there opinion. By changing the animal’s opinion they are controlling the way the other animals view all events.…
Animal Farm consists of many different forms of propaganda which is the spreading of ideas, information, or rumors for purpose of helping or injuring someone or something. Because Animal Farm is based on a political system, it easily lends itself to satire. The flaws of animals are showcased in every situation. It is shown a lot through squealer and the animals on the farm, and they lack awareness of what they are doing. Because of the use of propaganda the animals lose their rights and freedoms.…
If some of the less intelligent animals started to see that things were unfair they held a small event or discussed it with squealer who would lie and make stories on how great napoleon is. The best use of propaganda is when the pigs said that jones would come back if they didn't listen to the pigs. And they made Snowball an scapegoat so everything that happened was blamed on him including if they already knew the actual cause for the tragedy. They weren't allowed to say napoleon's name unless it was formal too, indicating that he was the highest ranking official on the…
Many types of propaganda were utilized in animal farm: name calling, transfer, testimonial, and card stacking to name a few. One example would be the pig's use of their species to transfer Old Major’s power and respect upon…
Napoleon used propaganda to spread false information or inform the animals of certain things he wanted them to hear. Squealer, or propaganda, also used fear as a method to persuade the animals to do whatever their leader wanted.Just like Stalin, Napoleon takes advantage of the animals and becomes a dictator. Joseph Stalin had a secret police that would attack people who were against him.Similarly,Napoleon kidnapped and trained nine attack dogs to scare any animals who try to oppose him.The windmill symbolizes the pig’s power and their ability to manipulate the other animals. After Napoleon’s attack runs Snowball out of the farm, Squealer manipulates the animals into thinking the windmill was Napoleon’s idea. He manages to turn all the animals…
Language can control and manipulate situations in many ways. In the book "Animal Farm" situations are twisted and turned around with the use of language and propaganda, thus being done so by a pig named Squealer. Propaganda is information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. Squealer can talk his way out of everything, but why he can do this is because of his outstanding use of clear and precise language.…
That is what makes it so horrific; it takes morals and replaces them with human ideals that are not always just. This strong propaganda was also used destructively in Russia while under Stalin’s Communist rule. Newspapers like the Pravda, Russian for truth, told the unassuming people of all the “wonderful” things their leader was doing and kept questioners quiet. It was this propaganda and blindness of the people that made the Russian Revolution so harsh. The novel Animal Farm was written by George Orwell in protest of such totalitarianism. The novel is an allegory of the Russian Revolution and the story of the Russian Revulsion could not be told without propaganda. In the novel, Squealer, the pig, stands for propaganda in a profound way. Squealer propagandizes the animals, progressing from twisting words to telling half-truths to…
In his stories Nineteen Eighty Four and Animal Farm, George Orwell referenced the use of propaganda, as well as its consequences. If one were to read those stories, the overall message that could be concluded is that propaganda can be dangerous. While the term propaganda carried a negative connotation in the past, propaganda in today’s society is not always manifested in physical media and may not always be obvious. Today, propaganda can present itself in people’s thoughts, social media, and sermons. People use it to brainwash other people and to create paranoia and prejudice. They use people’s fear or confusion to manipulate their thoughts and actions. This use of propaganda can often be seen during war, for religious beliefs, and in politics.…

The novel “Animal Farm”, written by George Orwell, was written as a reference to the Russian Revolution during the Second World War. The main characters of the novel were two, Napoleon and Snowball. The animals in the farm were facing bad treatments from the owner of the farm, Mr Jones; therefore, the animals, led by Napoleon and Snowball, decided to raise a rebellion against Mr Jones and his workers. The rebellion succeeded, and the farm became owned by the animals. Throughout the novel, Napoleon and Snowball could never agree in anything. All of the sudden, one day Napoleon made a dirty move by convincing the animals in the farm that Snowball was a spy, and he was working with Mr Jones the whole time. This forced Snowball to escape from the farm leaving Napoleon the only leader in the farm. One of the most important themes…
xThe pigs were able to rise to power fairly easily through their imposition of propaganda to alter the animals’ thoughts and actions to the pigs’ favor. The pigs come to resemble humans, the last sign of their total dominance so the farm continues to run as it had for years, still ridden with oppressive leaders. The tale shows that a revolution does not always bring great change or a better outcome because the story does not end in a resolution or promise of a revolution. The idea of propaganda being implemented by a leader in order to rise to power is a theme that recurs throughout history, but as a teacher points out not only in governments.…
Propaganda is a weapon used to deceive the minds of living things. Throughout the novella Animal Farm, George Orwell depicts how propaganda is used to assert dominance through the lives of animals. Napoleon is able to maintain control over the other animals only because of Squealers convincing propaganda. Squealer controls the others by creating fear, manipulating messages and justifying their actions.…
In the story Old Major is a meritorious hog, thanks to all the prizes he got on several exhibitions other animals hold him in high esteem, as he is clever, smart and calm. His age gives him a supremacy in experience over his companions. He calls a meeting to discuss a strange dream he had and as a kind of authority elucidates how unfairly, cruelly and sorely all animals are treated by the human beings. Old Major was the first one to call them by the name “comrades” and this act of dubbing was in fact the beginning of a craving for freedom and sowing the grain of rebellion. To take the notion further, Old Major addresses the animals because he acts with some noble inducements to show them the trust in solidarity and strong belief in prosperous future if they federate. As a result, the hog might be perceived as a representation of a philosopher propagating the value of social justice, even naïve, however still hoping to inspire the people to aim for progress and put an end to being set in a treadmill.…
