Patroklus takes Achilles’ armour and wears it into battle without his consent in fighting in it. He wanted to raise the spirits of the troops to get them fighting again since Achilles still wasn’t fighting due to the loss of Briseis. This resulted in the event of Patroklus being killed by Hektor in both sources because Hektor believed that he would be killing Achilles. Every heroic warrior has a set of distinctive personality traits. In regards to Beowulf and Achilles, both men in a way were prideful, courageous, and leaders. Although both Achilles and Beowulf were prideful men, Beowulf’s pride could be seen as a positive while Achilles’s a negative. In other words, along with Beowulf’s pride comes a sense of comitatus because he fulfills his promises to the Danish king, Hrothgar, “We have gone through with a glorious [endeavor] and been much favored in this fight…” (Heaney 65). On the contrary, Achilles does not pledge allegiance to anyone in particular. Therefore, his pride becomes misconstrued into a negative attribute, rather than positive Achilles’s pride and stubbornness causes the Trojan War due to…

Achilles shows various forms of commitment in the Iliad. This god does not appear as often as others do, but when he does he appears with a bang. He and Agamemnon have ongoing beef, and because of this he resides from the Achaen army. The Achaens need his help to defeat Troy but he is so committed to his hatred for Agamemnon that he refuses to help. “never again, he’ll never rob me blind with his twistsul words again. Once is enough for him. Die and be damned for all I care” (9, 455-457). The beef begins when Agamemnon steals Achilles’ wife from him, whom he cherished very dearly. In the text it is very clear that Achilles is committed to his love for this woman, which isn’t common for the gods to do. “…anguish gripped Achilles. The heart…

Literary heroes have been important to stories and poems throughout history. Each author develops his hero through a unique writing style, combining conscious use of detail, diction, tone and other narrative techniques to outline a hero's personality. Homer, in his epic poem The Iliad, develops two classic heroes who are distinctly different at first glance, but upon closer inspection are very similar in terms of their basic characteristics. Hector and Achilles both are courageous soldiers, relatively honorable men, and respected leaders, but they also both have human failings that eventually lead to tragedy. In Homer's lyrical verses and in his use of detail, diction, meter and imagery, he paints his own portrait of a classic hero through the brave deeds as well as the human flaws of Hector and Achilles that eventually lead to the downfall of proud and powerful Hector.…

To play the terrifying and intimidating Achilles, Peterson was able get Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt. With casting Pitt, Peterson was able to really emphasis what was found in Achilles during the duration of the epic. Which is why Peterson giving Pitt an additional scene in the movie where it seems as if Achilles has emotions. In the film, Achilles is seen to be grieving the death of a valiant warrior, Hector. Despite that, in The Iliad, Achilles who slaughters Hector, is not seen demonstrating any kind of sensitivity towards the Trojan warrior's demise. The expansion of emotions to Achilles' character again gives the entire drama aspect to the theme of the film. It makes Achilles appear like one of us, rather than the fierce warrior he is really portrayed as in the epic. This gives the modern audience a kind of sensitivity towards Achilles, who has lost his cousin Patrocles and now he has slaughtered the prince of Troy, who like him, cherished his family. Helen was in the end taken by Menelaus, and Menelaus was not executed by Hector. By doing this Petersen gave the film a kind of good guy gets the girl sort feeling, as Paris is appeared to be honest and safe, despite the fact that he brought about the war. In the film he might be seen as a legend sort character, although in the epic, he is seen as an antagonist type of…

One major contrast between the two were the situations they were in. Beowulf had fought alone at most times against one monster with a few of his army men behind him. Achilles was in a war and did have some one on one combat, but ultimately killed a lot more than Beowulf had. Beowulf also got a great prize after defeating the demons, which was becoming King. Achilles will only have his name remembered forever, yet this is still an honor. Another big difference is their attitudes; Achilles was selfish at times and would only fight for what he believed in and only himself, where Beowulf crossed lands to help a king and not only himself.…
