How Does Ray Bradbury Use Figurative Language In All Summer In A Day
Many children use descriptive language and comparisons to express themselves through stories and daily speech. The protagonist in Ray Bradbury’s short story “All Summer in a Day”, Margot, uses figurative language such as similes to depict the sun. She does so in an attempt to prove to other children that she has in fact seen the sun and experienced its life-giving warmth. Unfortunately, the attempt was in vain. Throughout the story, the author utilizes similes to develop vivid imagery of the setting.
For many people and objects described in the story, Bradbury subtly illustrates them by using various similes. Margot uses figurative language to get her point across in several occasions. For example, she says, “[The sun is] like a penny” (3).

In Ray Bradbury’s All Summer In a Day, he teaches readers not to bully someone because you are jealous of them. In the first paragraph readers will learn how the kids are jealous of Margot and why. One example of this is when one boy denied that Margot wrote the poem she shared about the sun. Some people may think that the theme is “don’t bully someone just because you don’t like them.” Yes maybe they don’t like her but someone shouldn’t just bully someone else even if they have a reason or not. Also Margot got locked in a closet, but why? Well Margot saw the sun when she was eight and the other kids saw it last when they were two. So, this story contains jealousy and bullying. A metaphor is used to compare things, or as a saying. Zora Neale Hurston uses a metaphor such as “no matter how far a person can go the horizon is still way beyond you – and pinched it into such a little bit of a thing that she could tie it about her granddaughter’s neck tight enough to choke her.” A literary device such as a metaphor is used constantly to emphasize certain objects or events in Janie’s life to make them more significant.…

Abigail feels trapped with all this situation of her sister missing, rather than feeling protected, its vice-versa. Another example is, “The kiss was short, and when he pulled back, I could see his breath, like frosting, lighting up the air,” page 189.
