How Does Reading Decline Over Time

Reading is very important in present time, but not everyone is doing it well or at all. Even though reading may seem easy not everyone is doing it, even though it is a very great skill to posses. If we can not get more people reading or reading better than we will be failing on an intellectual level. Reading may seem boring and unnecessary, but it is a needed skill for the 21st century.

Reading makes us smarter individuals. According to Raymond Mar and Keith Oatley “Its disappearance would imperil the intellectual and emotional development of generations growing up online,”(“ Reading Literature Makes Us Smarter and Nicer” par. 3). Without reading our intellectual levels and abilities would decline over time. Also we need to educate others especially children, but not all adults can read, thus making this a difficult process. “ According to a study conducted late April by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy, 32 million adults in the U.S. can’t read. That’s 14 percent of the population.” (“The U.S. Illiteracy Rate Hasn’t Changed In 10 years” par. 2). If 14 percent of the population ca not read then their children will more than likely not read and so on and so forth. If we do not take action and this skill is lost the country will become less intellectual as the years progress.
If we can not understand words we will not be able to explain ideas. In Fahrenheit 451 they often did not talk because they did not have the desire to understand how others felt or what they had to say. We also need to be able to read, so that we can avoid conflict between each other.
