My example for the Reading Literacy objective is reading the novel, Invisible Man. Throughout the journey of reading Invisible Man we’ve done pre-reading, reading, and post-reading activities and applied strategies from all three activities to other assignments. The second bullet of the reading literacy objective states “To apply pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading strategies to all reading assignments, including determining purpose and pre-reading vocabulary.” Before reading Invisible Man we read a multitude of different works of literature to better understand the time period in which the book had taken place. We also took notes during our reading and discussed our findings with the class as a whole. After reading, we completed…

The New England and Chesapeake colonies were both settled by English colonists. Most colonists moving from Great Britain to New England were families searching for religious salvation, rather than mostly the single men that traveled to the Chesapeake area in search of wealth. The immigrants of the Chesapeake area were greeted with a climate and soil that were perfect for cultivating tobacco, cotton, indigo, and rice. Those settling in New England could not rely on farming to support themselves because of the rocky soil in the north. While the majority of the Chesapeake colonists were not as cohesive due to the great distance from farms to these towns, New England had close-knit church events, meetings, and schools. Although, the New England and Chesapeake colonies were both settled by people at English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies because of motives, environment, and towns/communities.…

Educating and guiding students to read and become fluent readers is a life changing experience for the students. Increasing literacy skills in students prepares them for academic and professional careers. Educators must reflect on their own teaching practices and implementation of intervention strategies to meet the needs of all children while taking into account of their individual reading readiness: emergent, beginner, and transitional. As educators are implementing strategies and teaching practices, they are creating a literate environment that is conducive to all readers.…

Kimberly is a sweet and hardworking student. She is very enthusiastic about reading and love fairytale books. Kimberly struggles with reading from the beginning of the year. The area of phonics specifically had been the hardest part of the reading process for her. The Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI) was administered on April 18th and helped as a diagnostic tool to make proper decisions and develop further an intervention plan for the student. She was struggling with the word list form the QRI assessment. She identified 12 words and scored 60 percent of a 100%. It was difficult for her to focus because her attention span is very short. Some words she was unfamiliar with or difficult to decode. It was easy to see the frustration when we…

I hope to one day teach secondary education, with an endorsement in English. Ideally, I want to teach high school juniors and seniors. For that reason, on this assignment I decided to focus on the common core standards of juniors and seniors. One of the themes that I noticed when reading through the standards for 11-12th grade literacy is that many of them focused on the students ability to analyze and think critically. It challenges students to not only interpret the text, but also to infer from it. An example of that is standard one, “ Cite strongly and through to textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text…” (CCTS,2016). Students are asked to not only understand what a…
