Although alcohol is harmful to everyone, alcohol harms adolescents much more than older adults. One's brain does not complete development until the age of 25. This time marks a critical period for neurodevelopment. The mind has not fully formed its critical and rational thinking abilities. [1] Studies show that alcohol is deterrent to the process [2] Not only does alcohol consumption affect the brain, it also affects female maturation and reproduction abilities during adolescents [3]. Not only that, but because of an adolescents inability to rationally think or make good judgments, they are more likely to binge drink or engage in heavy alcohol consumption than any other group[4], an action that has obvious negative health effects include liver and brain problems. Underage drinking can cause multiple issues with the body's and brain's development. The brain plays a very important role in everyday life. This causes issues since the brain is not fully developed until a person reaches their early twenties ("Teen Brain."). The brain provides basic functions like picking up a pencil or even telling the body what to do. Alcohol consumption can interfere with development of the young adult brain's frontal lobes, essential for functions such as emotional regulation, planning, and organization ("Drinking Age ProCon.org."). Also, alcohol consumption interferes with this early adult brain development, the potential for chronic problems such as greater…

I believe alcohol is a depressant that alters perceptions, emotions, and senses. Alcohol first acts as a stimulant, and then it makes people feel relaxed and a bit sleepy. High doses of alcohol seriously affect judgment and coordination. Drinkers may have slurred speech, confusion, depression, short-term memory loss, and slow reaction times. I believe a vast amount of alcohol drunk in a short period of time may cause alcohol poisoning. Teens who uses alcohol can become psychologically dependent upon it to feel good dealing with life, or handle stressful situation. I believe, their bodies may demand more and more to achieve the same kind of high experienced in the beginning and . Some teens are also at risk of becoming physically addicted to alcohol. Withdrawal from alcohol can be painful and even life threatening. Symptoms can range from shaking, sweating, nausea, anxiety, and depression to hallucinations, fever, as well as convulsions. Alcoholism may start innocuously, due to the acceptability of social drinking, but over time, can lead to serious health problems, including brain, kidney and liver damage. A source called “Should The Drinking Age Be Raised To 25?” stated that there are fewer accidents involving drunk drivers since they have raised the drinking age from 18 to 21. If the drinking age was raised even more, there would even be less wrecks involving alcohol than there are now. The next big reason I believe it should be raised would be that the brain doesn't fully mature until the age of 25. With that being said, alcoholic beverages being consumed will have a different reaction on people who drink before that age. Many young people are killed every day due to drinking and driving. With the drinking age being raised, the brains of humans will be fully mature and they will be able to make the best decisions because young people aren't educated out drinking risks. Another article that I visited stated that on average, 73% of college students drink sometimes, but the average male freshman in college drinks an average of 7.4 alcoholic beverages per week. Imagine how their grades are. If a study in 1960, most college students spent 24 hours a week studying their school work, but now most college students only study around 7.4 hours each week because of parties and drinking. Also, drinking at such a young age can also damage the ends of the neurons, which can differ the way they communicate with the different cells in the brain. Lastly, 75% of people who drank before the age of 25 suffer many issues in their adulthood due to alcohol consumption. Usually, when teens are already drinking at such a young age, manny turn to stronger substances and usually become alcohol dependent by the time they reach their adult…

Heavy alcohol us in men reduces testosterone levels causing breast enlargement, infertility and other side effects. Heavy alcohol use in women can cause menstrual irregularities and even infertility. It has come to the attention of the Chicago Department of Public Health that there is a concerning health risk among emerging adults (18-30) in the state of Illinois. The health risk in particular is the use of alcohol. Over indulgence in alcohol results in injures, car accidents, and domestic abuse. These behaviors are toxic to the individual and society which is why this issue must be addressed and reduced. As adults transition from adolescence they are given new forms of freedom and independence, which can have costly effects on their health. According to Health, United States (2008), “about 6%–8% of young men and 3%–5% of young women reporting heavy drinking. The Mercury News Writes an article about the negative effects of alcohol in young adults and argues that eighteen year olds are not mature enough to handle the backlash of being under the influence.(2011) Researcher of alcohol consumption in younger people, Kim Gibson states, “The younger population is into risk-taking and so if you wait for more maturity, you’re not matching the risk-taking with the alcohol consumption. ”(DeCeglie, 2011, 10 ) As young adults develop and mature they become more conscientious and aware of the way alcohol can truly affect them. By lowering the drinking age to eighteen we face the issue of potential alcoholism at a young age.
