As a way to create interest in the audience William Shakespeare would write plays that connected with audience, using what they were surrounded by. With the memory of previous Kings and Queens, the audience can relate to the corruption and craziness of the monarch in the plays Shakespeare wrote. Considered one of Shakespeare's best plays, he wrote Hamlet around 1600 with its various concepts of love, guilt and revenge throughout. Shorty after the death of Hamlet, the previous King of Denmark, his brother, Claudius marries Gertrude the widow of Hamlet. Before the time period of the play the audience is made aware that King Claudius murdered King Hamlet. When the ghost of Hamlet visits Hamlet he tells him this news, however it is not confirmed until later in Claudius’ soliloquy. Not only does Claudius murder King Hamlet but has the intentions and plans to have Hamlet murdered as well. The rot in the state of Denmark comes directly from the corruption of King Claudius, by marrying his brother’s wife the murder of his brother, and planning the murder of his nephew.

The ghost tells Hamlet that he was murdered by Claudius, however the audience does not know if the ghost is telling the truth. Throughout the play Hamlet tries to expose him, however in Claudius’ soliloquy he confirms the murder, “O, my offence is rank, it smells to heaven; / It hath the primal eldest curse upon’t / A brother’s murder” (3.3.36-39). Although Claudius is showing some guilt towards his actions, this is his second crime the audience is made aware of and is clearly the main source of the rot and evil within Denmark.
