Steinbeck explores different attitudes to women in of mice and men. He does this by having only 3 different roles for women in the book, a wife/mother, an actress or a prostitute.
Women have only 3 different roles in the book, a wife/mother, an actress or a prostitute, they are not valued because they are not physically strong, and in the depression, those who could work were viewed with higher respect. In fact, they are not even supposed to be seen on the ranch. "Ain’t no place for a girl" this shows that only men work in the ranch not girls or Women.
Curley’s wife is the only main female character. This at once highlights her status as an outcast- she has no one similar to relate to. The ranch men cannot perceive her as a real human being, and don't try to understand her, they simply mark her off as a tart. “George looked away from her and then back” this shows that Georges body language suggest he doesn’t like her. We can also link this when George says to Curley’s wife when she trys to have a conversation with George and lennie she says “sometimes curley’s in here”. George says “well he ain’t now”. The tone he uses is not happy he knows that girls are trouble.
Curley’s wife is the single female character in of mice and men. She is not given a name, but referred to only as “curley’s wife”. This shows that she feels imprisonment (trapped). She is Curley’s possession and his possession only. Her only purpose is to be Curley’s companion.
George thinks Curley’s wife is trouble; we begin to dislike her because she does not respect herself. Women are looked down on in the novel. “I seen’em poison before, but I never seen no piece of jail bait worse than her”. This shows that…….
Curley’s wife is overdressed for ranch life.” Her finger –nails were red”. This shows that……..
In chapter 5 we find out her dream is to be a movie star.” She made a small grand gesture with her arm and hand to
