These are ones that change the way businesses operate and provide huge improvement for those that adopt them. Companies are using technology solutions to improve their firm’s productivity in some business functions to gain a competitive advantage against competitors that produce similar products. If companies can produce similar products at cheaper prices because of increased productivity due to new technology innovation then this is a big success for technology. Marketing can be achieved by placing advertisements that reach millions of buyers on the internet or through social networking sites. New technology can not only speed processes up, or allow flexible new ways of working, but can transform how your business works, and can often save you time and money. Technology allows for the management, collection, and reporting of your customer data. There is no better purpose for a business than to provide a good experience to customers and technology helps provide the resources needed to manage customer data. Customer data can be used for customer service activities, marketing, product development, customer surveys, and to improve the activities that are needed to make your customers satisfied and enjoy dealing with your business.
Though we like the advantages that come with technology at work there are many ways in which technology can impact negatively on a business. The use of social networking sites at work can cause a lot of distraction and it affects the productivity of employees. Some companies have decided to block access to specific websites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, because of the distraction they cause. Technology has paved the way to a new and exciting life. Since technology has become such a major part of our modern day lives, there is much speculation on how fast we are actually accruing new technologies. According to Moore 's Law, we double our technology every two years. This number has actually been updated to 18 months recently, and we can only expect that new to become smaller and smaller. (Greene, para. 1-6, 2011) In other words, we are learning more than ever! Out with the old, and in with the new. In many cases, technology moving forward makes for 'smaller ' phones and computers, features go up, and our technological tools in the world become more involved. This is especially true in the world of business. Technology helps businesses to better reach their customers, organize records, and to establish an online presence. (Swanson, para. 5-11, 2012)…

Firstly, by having technological advancements as the most imperative goal in businesses it can result in a dependency on technology. Dependency means that the company’s main reliance is on technology in order to function. Therefore if the technology fails then the business can become unsuccessful. For example this reliance on technology was made evident when the computers that ran the power for Melbourne tunnels failed in October 2012 and resulted in the Melbourne tunnels being shut down (ABC, 2012, para 1). On the other hand, technology can result in a more efficient workplace and work environment. For example Intel has increased their productivity through wireless notebooks by five percent per employee (Rungta, Tierney, Towles, 2008, p2). However when technology does breakdown it can cause larger problems such as, a loss of customer reliability and data los. This was made evident when a fault occurred in Commonwealth Bank Automated Teller Machines and online banking system in March 2012 and resulted in customers being able to overdraw their account (Zappone, 2012, para). Therefore, organisation’s need to focus on strategies that allow people to work with minimal technology. Hence, it is evident that companies should not depend on technology because it is not always reliable and can negatively affect a businesses performance. Therefore technological advancements should not be imperative for a business today.…
