How Does Technology Affect The Steel Industry
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is used widely by SMEs as well as the large organizations. It helps SMEs by keeping them updated with the latest technology and stay ahead of the business landscape. For a large organization, there is every need to integrate the various departments so that there is an integrated view of core business processes, often in real-time, using common databases maintained by a database management system. An ERP solution can improve a company's efficiency and reduce costs, yet many companies are using outdated or convoluted legacy ERP systems which could be doing just the opposite.

All the key discoveries of the human genius, for instance, the steam engine, means of communications, automobile, aero-plane and computers are in one way or other, fastened together with steel and with its sagacious and multifarious applications. Steel is a versatile material with multitude of useful properties making it indispensable for furthering and achieving continual growth of the economy – be it construction, manufacturing, infrastructure or consumables. The level of steel consumption has long been regarded as an index of industrialization and economic maturity attained by a country.
The Indian steel industry is organized in three categories:
1. Main producers: They have integrated steel making facility with plant capacities over 0.5 mT and utilize iron ore and coal/gas for production of steel.
The main producers are Tata steel, SAIL, and RINL.
2. Other major producers: They include ESSAR, ISPAT and JVSL.
3. The secondary producers: The secondary sector is dispersed and consists of: (i) Backward linkage from about 120 sponge iron producers that use iron ore and non-coking coal, providing feedstock for steel producers; (ii) Approximately 650 mini blast furnaces, electric arc furnaces, induction furnaces and energy optimizing furnaces that use iron ore, sponge iron and melting scrap to produce steel; (iii) Forward linkage with about

The training programs will have to be organized for separate categories of users (e.g. core team members, senior management, middle management, technical team, self service etc) and for separate geographic locations. The Wipro Team will be responsible for the preparation of the training material and end user manuals. End user manuals should cover “how to use” concepts for all ERP modules to be

Over the years Nucor has expanded progressively into the manufacturer of a wider and wider range of steel products, which has gotten it to be able to offer steel users one of the broadest product lineups in the industry. In this industry steel products are considered commodities, and most steel plants turn out products with comparable quality to other companies. This makes one producer’s reinforcing bar essentially the same as another producer’s reinforcing bar, which in turn makes a particular grade of sheet steel made at one plant almost identical to the same grade of sheet steel made from another plant (C-195). Because of this, steel producers are forced to be price-competitive with the market price of each individual steel product being driven by demand-supply conditions for that product.…

Steelmaking is the process for producing steel from iron and ferrous scrap. In steelmaking, impurities such as nitrogen, silicon, phosphorus, and excess carbon are removed from the raw iron, and alloying elements such as manganese, nickel, chromium and vanadium are added to produce different grades of steel. Limiting dissolved gases such as nitrogen and oxygen, and entrained impurities (termed "inclusions") in the steel is also important to ensure the quality of the products cast from the liquid steel.[1] There are two major processes for making steel, namely basic oxygen steelmaking which has liquid pig-iron from the blast furnace and scrap steel as the main feed materials, and electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking which uses scrap steel or direct reduced iron (DRI) as the main feed materials. Oxygen steelmaking is fuelled predominantly by the exothermic nature of the reactions inside the vessel where as in EAF steelmaking, electrical energy is used to melt the solid scrap and/or DRI materials. In recent times, EAF steelmaking technology has evolved closer to oxygen steelmaking as more chemical energy is introduced into the process.…
