As technology advances, tools for communication become increasingly available to each individual at any time, it is unreasonable to expect those who are not mature, to have the self-control to restrict themselves only to academic material. The most intrusive and addictive of these technologies appeals to the human instinct to communicate, as social media. Even at school, kids are able to text and Snap Chat their friends instead of listening to a lecture by a teacher discreetly to entertain themselves, which would have been obvious without the existence of cell phones. Vigdor from Duke University, "when adults were not supervising computer use, children "are left to their own devices, and the impetus isn't to do homework but play around."" Indeed, as entertainment services become available on a digitized platform, unlike the pre-internet world where much of entertainment and socialization between children were limited by daylight, now there is a 24 hour access to the task such as YouTube videos and video games instead of the less desirable objective to tackle, like homework. However, technology also comes with promises along with its consequences, as with Vishal Singh, who was exposed to film making from exposure to online content. Similarly, the internet allows students and children around the world who are not exposed to different types of careers and opportunities to find goals which were previously unknown to be viable options. In this way, the new online infrastructure allows students around the world to find a passion, unlike their predecessors.
