Throughout “The Custom House” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, various analytical devices, such as an extended metaphor, contrast and heavy imagery, are used to demonstrate the inconsistent Us Federal Government. Hawthorne uses an extended metaphor of “the eagle” throughout the passage alluding to the current US Federal Government. The metaphor establishes an overall understand of a complex and unreliable sense to the system. Through the metaphorical eagle, Hawthorne creates a contrast between the motherly “sheltering” side of the eagle to the “fierceness” of the powerful eagle. Establishing this contradictional persona to the eagle, creates, once more, a reluctance to trust the government. Lastly, Hawthorne uses strong imagery of the “nestlings” being…
I walked outside and it was hot vs. I took a leap outside into the sun that blazed down on me it felt like I was wearing millions of winter coats. Which one help you visualize which is happening better? The book I'm reading which is "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld used a lot of figurative language throughout this story. For an example on page 238 it states, "it just felt flat, like a song she'd heard to many time." By using a simile it helped me understand what she meant by flat. If that simile wasn't there I could of though it meant deflated or flat like a pancake. To add on, using figurative language makes the book more clear and it allows the book to continue with a flow. As you can see, the book I chose to read "Uglies" contains figurative…

Now I personally don’t know what a conversation between my friend and I would be like while we’re waiting to purchase and do drugs, but I do have an idea of what a conversation would be like when we’re together for more than five minutes. There are times when a normal conversation takes a turn for the worst and ends up being strange and you find yourself wondering “How the hell did we end up here?” A funny film where we see two friends having a conversation, Thomas Simon’s Wolf & Short film is both eyebrow raising, and hilarious.…

In this excerpt from Ann Petry's The Street, the wind is the central antagonist. The narrator efficiently utilizes a third-person omniscient narrator to relay to the reader the bitterness of the cold, along with the adamant determination of Lutie Johnson. Through the use of chillingly descriptive imagery, and figurative language including resplendent personification, the narrator successfully conveys the perilous nature of the cold to enhance Lutie Johnson's temporal and sensory experiences.…
Throughout the course of William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, the characters of the boys changes drastically. In the beginning, the boys are very disorganized and overwhelmed. Overtime, that disorder is changed into the organization of two separate groups of boys that have completely different ideas of how to run the island. This causes tension and hatred between the boys. In the scene of Simon’s death, Golding uses leery imagery, distinctive and violent diction, and dark figurative language to show the boys’ dynamic transformation from lost and naive school boys to savage and ruthless beasts.…

Names are a very important thing that most people are given shortly after birth. A name is “the word or words that a person, thing or place is known by” (Cambridge Online Dictionary (2011), Retrieved November 6th 2012). Names are given to identify an individual in replace of calling someone “it”, a term used to refer to something inanimate or without a name. A name shows that someone loves us enough to name us; to think about it with care and affection. Names surrounding the author have a great influence also and the main character in Frankenstein shares the penname of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Shelley’s husband. In The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood uses the influence of feminism to create the names of the majority of the female characters. This relates to the way women are portrayed in Frankenstein and how their names represent their personalities.…
An In the story "Anthony's Dilemma", Anthony uses non-comprehensive language in describing a business situation. While he may not have been intentionally sexist, his use of language shows that he expects professionals and business people to be male, and that women in the business world are rare. It is important for Anthony to improve his sexist language, as he says, so that he won't offend anyone, but, more importantly, so that he will help to create an environment that everyone feels they belong. While some of the language issues seem small individually, they can all add up to an environment that is hostile to women, leading to the possibility of a less diverse work environment than is otherwise possible, and also to potential legal troubles.…
Warning: If you are easily offended, you may want to request to review a different essay. Personalities are expressed very differently through film than through classic literature such as books. A person may seem very eccentric on paper, but simply mimicking those actions on film does not necessarily convey that personality.…
Joyce Oats and Charlotte Gilman created short stories depicting how women living in a patriarchal society can cause mental breakdowns, and psychological problems. Oppression can lead to a mental breakdown where reality becomes distorted. In both short stories, even though the technique of the oppression differs, the final results are the same. Male figures oppress women to a point where a confusion between reality and fantasy is seen. Oppression through the lives and stories of Joyce Oats and Charlotte Perkins Gilman will be examined thoroughly, and the types of oppression will be discussed.…
