The first scene is set at night time at the Great Wall of China and gives out a feeling of sinister and danger. The only characters which appear are Shan Yu, his eagle, the Huns that attack the great wall, as well as the Chinese guard who tries to escape and give signal. The music and sound effects also helps creating this more creepy and dangerous scene; the second scene moves to the Emperors palace cleverly and gives out a very grand and royal feeling. The transition is also very ingenious as lots of realistic camera angles have also been used to show out such feelings and the characters’ characteristics. The third scene moves to Mulan’s house which is a total different feeling and event happening, it introduces what a girl Mulan is, which doesn’t fit into the Chinese community, the sound effects also suggests the personality of Mulan.
The opening shot in Mulan is the Great Wall of China at night time and the scene is very deserted. The only colours are black, grey, and brown which are all dark colours dominating the scene to be sinister, creating an ominous and creepy atmosphere, suggesting danger approaching. It is set at night time which creates even more of these feelings. But there is also another colour – yellow, the only colour which is bright from the fire and flag. It is a warning signal, but also to signify that this is China’s last hope against their enemy. Flag is also yellow and it represented China, especially the emperor. Further, the eyes of Shan Yu are green – another bright colour which suggests that he is not only evil, but even a monstrous creature. For the lighting, the villains (Shan Yu and his eagle) are always in the dark with no lighting and where the fire or the flag is not shining as well, however, the guard always had the light of the fire reflecting on his face to show that he is the ‘good’ character in defending his country from invaders.
