Cummings are about careless people and reveal that those who choose to be careless are generally unhappy and unable to achieve their true dreams. Both selections are about careless and reveal through the use of tone, diction, imagery symbolism and motifs, how people live their lives not caring about others and about the consequences, and therefore they generally will not be happy or successful.

In chapter 2 on page 21 Fitzgerald writes, “a single green light minute and far away that might have been the end of a dock” to describe Gatsby’s hope of getting Daisy back. He never forgot; in fact, for the past 5 years he has been following her and working hard to become rich in order to try to win her back. It is clear that Gatsby cares for Daisy, but his inability to realize she is in the past is what leads to his downfall.
