The Energy Star program was developed by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 due to concerns about the increasing emission of greenhouses gases. The increasing sales and use of Energy Star products have influenced manufacturers, retailers, and other businesses to produce Energy Star products and use them in their buildings. The Energy Star program has included its Energy Star logo on many products and has recently extended to cover new homes and commercial and industrial buildings. The increase in sales helps companies increase profits and become more competitive. The amount of retail partners has increased by 45% since 2004, with 800 partners in 2005 (EPA, 2006). With the participation of 1500 manufacturers, a total of 35000 products models across more than 50 different categories contain the Energy Star label (EPA, 2006). The increase in Energy Star products has been reflected in the sharp increase of sales over the last few years. For example, Lowe's, a retail company, experienced a 44% increase in sales of Energy Star qualified products in 2004 . Sears, through its promotion plans, sold more than 3.7 million Energy Star products, a 35% increase since 2004. At Gorell Enterprises, a manufacturer of vinyl windows and patio doors, the majority of sales were ENERGY STAR qualified, and nearly all of Gorell's vinyl windows and doors carry an ENERGY STAR label (U.S Department of Energy, 2005).
