How Ethical Should The Therapist Break Confidentiality?

I believe this was unethical of the therapist to a certain degree. I believe the therapist went a little too far when breaking confidentiality. I don’t find it necessary for the therapist to take the liberty of informing Valerie’s employer about the suicide risk to help Valerie avoid the possibility of losing her job. Nor do I find it necessary for the therapist to inform Valerie’s professors that she would be missing class for the next week or two. I believe that Valerie could have requested a doctor’s note without going into detail as an excusable absence from work and school. In contrast, I did find it appropriate that the therapist break confidentiality to protect Valerie from self-harm or acting on her plan to commit suicide. However,
