How Far Have Ideas About Childhood Changed Over The Centuries?
To what extend have ideas about childhood changed over the centuries?

New concepts of childhood have been established to an enormous extent over the centuries. Over the course of the 18th and 19th centuries people have had different ideas of childhood and how children should be raised. On the contrary, as society has developed, perceptions about childhood have arisen. In modern society people have grown and have recognised new notions of childhood. Today, the media plays a large role in the way children are brought up. Society also faces differences with adversities in child imprisonment as children are viewed children as innocent thus causing punishments to become less punitive. Also there has been a large difference of teenage pregnancies

Throughout the early 1800’s children as young as 7 years of age were assumed to be ‘’incapable of criminal intent’’ nonetheless if a crime was to occur which was committed by a child over 7 years of age, he or she would face a criminal trial and based on the child’s crime they may be sentenced to life imprisonment. Some of these crimes included murder and theft. In the 1990s, the Australian government came to the decision to discontinue child imprisonment as they argued that it was inhumane to sentence a child to die in prison. In current Australian Law, a child under 18 cannot be condemned to life imprisonment however the child must attend a juvenile prison where they will face their punishment. In relation is the case is the abduction of James Bulger. In 1993 Liverpool, England, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson were charged for the crime of abducting, torturing and murdering 2 year old James Bulger. The two boys were sentenced to eight years in a juvenile prison. If this case was to occur in the 1900s the situation would be approached differently as the boys may face an execution whereas in today’s society children are seen as innocence and unsure of their actions. This displays a modification of a huge extent throughout the centuries as children were treated differently when it came to punishment thus making the childhood experience different as centuries

    Childhood studies has a major impact of the lives of children, studies shown from the sixteenth century to date allow us to understand the changes that have been put into place to support and guide the lives of children today. Historical evidence from the sixteenth century provides us with ideas about the nature of children and how they were seen as sinners even whilst in the womb. This was known as the 'Puritan' view, historian childhood studies showed this to be in the form of whipping, canning and other forms of punishment.     Punishment was the central criminal law philosophy in English common law. A conclusive presumption that children under seven could not form criminal intent eliminated the youngest from the criminal justice system. Children between the ages of seven and fourteen were presumed incompetent to form the requisite criminal intent; the prosecutor, however, could rebut that presumption by demonstrating that the child knew the difference between right and wrong. Children over age fourteen were presumed to have the capacity to form criminal intent. There were no special courts for children, and they were treated as adult criminals.
