How Far Was Germany Responsible For Ww1
Germany is completely responsible for the outbreak of world war I. They are responsible because of three reasons one of the reasons is the Blank Check, the ultimatum, and the Schiefflen plan. Therefore it is completely valid to claim that Germany is responsible for the outbreak of world war I. The Blank Check was a sympathy card given to Austria Hungary from Germany. Germany gave unconditional support to Austria Hungary. Germany gave the support to Austria Hungary because of the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 18, 1914. Kaiser Wilhem had an emotional connection with archduke. He was upset when he had heard the news of the assassination. He Described the Serbians as “bandits” and “murderers”(stoessinger pg 3). He wanted revenge and he though that the assassination represented a thread to the monarchical principle. He wanted Austria to punish Serbia. He thought that he world would be sympathetic about it. Germany was responsible for the outbreak of world war I because Germany did not fully explain what did the …show more content…

The debate of Germanys responsibility for the outbreak of war first began with the charge of war guilt given in Article 231 of the Versailles Treaty. Germany rejected Article 231 and successfully campaigned against it as by 1950 it had become widely accepted that Germany where not solely responsible for the outbreak of war in 1914. The first source from Gordon Corrigan, Mud, Blood and Poppycock, published in 2003 addresses Germany’s “unconditional support” to Austria- Hungary to support the idea of Germany being the main reason for the outbreak of World War 1. In this source Corrigan refers to Fritz Fischer’s theory in which he argued that Germany’s leaders might not have been solely to for what happened in 1914 but hold a substantial share of the responsibility. Source 2 from L.F.C Turner, The Origins of the First World War, published in 1970 agrees with Source 1 by reinforcing that it was Germany’s support to Austria and the Blank Cheque that were vital in the starting of War. On the other hand, Source 3 from James Joll, The Origins of the First World War, published in 1984 disagrees with source 1 as Joll highlights the involvement of other countries with a main focus on Britain being a main factor in the cause of war. Source 2 agrees with this to some extent as it also discusses that Germany is not the only country that is responsible.…

Austria and Hungary were the countries who made Serbia and Russia angry, not Germany. Austria and Hungary wanted Serbian land because they had just gained vast amounts of land from the Second Balkan War. The only reason Germany entered the war is because Austria and Hungary promised land to Germany. Their new Franz, Austrias military leader, was assassinated and the one who replaced him wanted to attack Serbia because he held a grudge against Serbia for a long time, but their Emperor said no. Their Emperor was 84 years old and he didn’t want to deal with a war, but the Franz attacked anyway and he didn’t realize that in attacked Serbia, then he would have to attack Russia too. The latest Franz attacked anyway and they got Germany to help them. They were power hungry and they didn’t have a great of status at the time so they wanted more power. Russia sided with Serbia,…

Austria gave Serbia an ultimatum that it knew was unacceptable in order to draw Serbia into a war and defeat it. The Austrian ambassador to Germany learned that their ally, Germany, welcomed an opportunity to go to war with Serbia. Both the Austrians and the Germans feared a war in the future with Russia, Serbia’s protector, and Germany wanted to preemptively strike at Russia before it grew stronger militarily. Serbia easily rejected Austria’s ultimatum as it had assurance from Russia that the Russians would protect them should Austria…

All of the sources give different impressions as to wether Germany's leaders are responsibe for the outbreak of the First World War. Source 1 seems to strongly suggest that German leaders and the German Government did in fact push for the war with Hewitson blaming the Army and suggesting that Germany was looking for an opportunity to start war however he does not fully support the view that German leaders were responsible.Porter and Armour (Source 2) strongly supports this view by again pointing to the millitary and prime minister Bethmann Hollweg looking for an opportunity to wage war but again not fully placing the blame on Germany but looking at the threating actions of Russia and Britain. In contrast to both Source 1 and 2 Norman Stone ( Source 3) does not blame Germany, instead he suggest that the tension in Europe for the last decade finally reached an ultimatum in the July crisis and the war was the fault of all Great powers.…

Although Count Brockdorff-Rantzau, the German delegation leader believed that Germany was not at all responsible for world war one, the Treaty of Versailles take it that Germany is the one responsible for this war due to their loss(Doc.4). At the delegation to the Versailles Peace Conference the German delegation leader had protested that one of the causes of this war was imperialism. The method of imperialism added to the threat to other countries because of its policies of retaliation and expansion(Doc.5). As a result of there being an expansion throughout European nations, mobilization occurred. Mobilization lead to militarism adding to the factors of tension and threats. While, both the…

In source 1, JCG Rohl and Keith Wilson undoubtedly present Germany as being solely to blame, supporting the ideas of Fritz Fischer. Indeed, they highlight, “Far from being willing to accept British proposals for international mediation in the looming conflict, Bethmann Hollweg and Jagow advised the Austrians strongly against accepting them”. Therefore suggesting that Germany encouraged Austria throughout the July crisis to be aggressive and favored war over peace. Evidence to support this lies strongly with the blank cheque Germany issued Austria on July 5th, which pledged unconditional support for their allies in whatever action they decided to take against the Serbs. Therefore, by offering their full backing, they were knowingly giving Austria the option of war, thus it can therefore be argued that Germany pushed for the outbreak of world war one. This view is also supported in source 3, in which C Lee states, “methods of violence became the national vices of pre-war Germany, making the country an object of alarm to every leading nation”, thus suggesting that Germany was the main aggravator in the events leading up to war. Indeed, in the second Moroccan crisis, Germany attempted to bully France into giving her the French…

In response to Russian Empire’s and Austria-Hungary’s declaration of war against each other after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria, Germany declared war on Russia on August 1, 1914. Three days later, the German Reichstag declared Burgfrieden or “civil peace” which declared for people to set aside their conflicts aside and unite to defend the country. Most Germans expecting a rapid victory, enthusiastically supported the war. Their views, however, shifted from ebullience to one of detest. Opinions toward war all varied to each person. Some supported the war through the end, while some changed their view and wanted the war to end. In another perspective, some saw the war as an economic opportunity.…

After the assassination of Archduke Franz, Austria gave Serbia an ultimatum which was turned down. This was the July crisis of 1914 which eventually turned into a declaration of war between Serbia and Russia and led to the start of World War One. As Serbia turned to Russia for aid, Germany saw the threat of being encircled with the possible annexation of Austria-Hungary. In response to Russia secretly mobilizing forces to Serbia, Germany declared war on Russia to protect their own borders. Germany then declared war on France due to France’s official alliance with Russia.…

It is usually lead out by two or more separate forces that both have the hope that their opponent will be forced to split their army to deal with both threats, therefore minimizing their odds of success. During World War I, Germany, under Kaiser Wilhelm II, fought a two-front war against France, Britain, Belgium, and, later, American forces on the Western Front while, at the same time, fighting the Russians on the Eastern Front. The immediate cause of the war was the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, by 19 year old Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip. After the assassination, Austria-Hungary sent an ultimatum to Serbia on July 23, making demands developed to humiliate the Serbs so they would reject the ultimatum. On July 28, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, after ordering a partial mobilization of its armed…

After an immense amount of tension caused by nationalism and industrialism, and the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Serbian group called the Black Hand, war broke out between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, eventually spreading to include many major powers of the time. During the summer of 1914, after refusal from Serbia to hunt down the group responsible for killing the archduke and failure to meet the conditions of the ultimatum given, Austria-Hungary prepared for an invasion of Serbia. Knowing that Russia was an ally of Serbia leaders fears that declaring war could potentially bring Russia’s allies, France and Great Britain into the battle. As a result, Austria-Hungary waited until support was established from Germany to declare war on July 28. The powers didn’t know at…

The outbreak of the First World War occurred in 1914 and there are many reasons for why the outbreak happened. Blackbourn writes that Germany “had done much to create international tension” and this implies that Germany were responsible for the outbreak of war as tensions were rising between countries in Europe due to the relations they had with several other countries. This had a knock on effect due to the Alliance system which was in place so that countries were protected by their allies. It meant that any sort of conflict between two countries escalated quickly due to the countries across Europe being locked into an alliance. The importance of the Alliance system can be reinforced by L.F.C Turner who writes “Bethmann pushed Austria into a premature declaration of war” which suggests that Germany were responsible because they gave Austria a Blank Cheque which was Germany giving Austria permission to attack Serbia stating that they would help aid their attack on Serbia as they wanted the war to happen sooner rather than later. This is because they knew Russia was growing stronger and they were feeling encircled by the Triple Entente which was the alliances between Britain, France and Russia and they clearly felt threatened due to where they are placed geographically. Bethmann also writes in the source that Germany “built a battle fleet aimed at the British” which implies that Germany was aggressive…

I as Germany blame England as being responsible for starting World War One because they started Imperialism. Imperialism led to alliances, nationalism, and militarism. To begin with, the Treaty of Versailles says that England’s Queen Victoria caused the Scramble for Africa. Knowing this, England basically forced me to create alliances because I felt that England was going to become too powerful and be too threatening. England created tensions because of their need to feel superior which is why it is not a surprise that we got into a war. Having the alliances got all of Europe involved which made it into World War One.…

Once Austria declared war on Serbia for the assassination of the Duke, Russia would enter the war because they supported Serbia since, according to Ponting, they wanted to support another “Slav and Orthodox State” which led to the outbreaks of war.5 Germany planned to attack France first because they were scared she would mobilize faster than her ally Russia but Germany didn’t expect Russia to mobilize as fast as she did. When she mobilized armies against Austria she had also mobilized armies against Germany.6Britain at the time was neutral which was beneficial to Germany as the German ambassador remarked “has the best colonies and doesn’t need a war with us…”7 Once Germany attacked Belgium, who was neutral, to get to France it guaranteed Britain to come to war as well as France. The Carnegie report blames Germany for also causing a greater war once they violated the “neutrality of Belgium and Luxemburg.”…

I learned that World War 1 was caused by Austria, who had no colonies but attempted to conquer some new lands towards the east. In 1914, the Austrian heir was murdered by a Serb in Sarajevo. His people wanted to avenge his death so Russia was drawn in. Germany was also involved because they were Austria’s ally. Germany first went to attack France; however, Britain did not want Germany to become to powerful so they also became involved. Millions were fighting in this war, it was very brutal and gruesome. The battle was everywhere and new weapons like bombs, machine guns, and poison gas made mass murder easier. Over 21 million were wounded and 8.5 million died. In the end, Germany was the one held accountable for the war. They were also punished…
