Potato Chips 1
Introduction
When people eat a bag of potato chips they do not usually look to see how many calories are in each bag. Potato chips come in a variety of flavors, including: barbecue, sour cream and onion, and salt and vinegar. According to Harvard University analysis the average person eats about 6 lbs of potato chips a year. The purpose of this experiment was to inform readers that were not already aware of how much grease are in the potato chips of their choice. There is a difference between reading the label, and physically seeing how much grease are in these chips. When a person sees the grease physically it might make them put the chips back on the shelf vs them reading the label. The hypothesis stated in this experiment was that the bag of Lays classic potato chips were going to contain the most grease. After eating lays potato chips according to some of the subjects, they seemed to have a grease residue left on their hands after eating the chips.
Methods & Materials
The materials that were used throughout this experiment consisted of different brands of potato chips, graph paper, a rolling pin and sunlight. The first step was to find the serving size listed on the back of the bag of chips, write down the serving size on a notepad. Next find the total fat per serving for each brand of chips in the grams. Count out a number of chips equal to the serving size for that brand of chips. Next place the chips on a sheet of graph paper. Roll over the chips several times with a rolling pin. Remove the graph paper and tape the graph paper to a window.

Finally, Count the number of squares that are translucent from the grease. This set of methods were conducted a numerous amount of times to see if the outcome would be the same.
Results
Conducting this experiment it was proven that the Lays classic potato chips contained the most grease. The experiment was performed repeatedly, each time the results were the same. The barbecue chips which had the same amount in grams of fat per serving (90g) as the lays chips, only had 15 squares that were covered from the grease. The Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos had the lowest amount of fat per serving at 70 grams, meaning they had the lowest number of squares at 25. Lays Classic potato chips had the most number of squares at 151.
Discussion and Conclusion
Potato Chips 3
This experiment is not time consuming, it is very quick and easy for anybody to participate in. There were errors that were made in this experiment: Some of the chips were bigger than others, miscount of squares, and they paper was homemade graph paper not the one bought in stores. The chips were picked at random some of the chips were bigger than others, depending on how big or small the chips are depends on how much grease the graph paper is going to contain. Even though the experiment was repeated various times there is always a chance of a miscount, some of the squares were hard to tell if it was at least one half filled. Graphing paper that is supplied in the stores were not used in this experiment, it was made. This can have a huge effect on the experiment because the size of the squares may differ, if regular graph paper was used there is a good possibility the number of squares would have been different.

Cheetos are cornmeal snacks with a variety of different flavors. Invented in 1948 by Charles Elmer Doolin, who owned Frito Lay. In the experiment we will be using Flaming Hot Cheetos. A crunchy but yet spicy little snack. In a bag of Flamin Hot Cheetos, Frito Lay’s states it has 160 cal per 28 grams (fritolay.com). Using the cheetos we will record the mass of each cheetos used in each trial using a scale. Once we have calculated each cheetos mass we will record it on a chart. After measuring each cheetos we will then begin the experiment by first putting 20 ml of water in each tube. Then we will place the thermometer and record the start temperature of each trial. Then we will place the tube to the flame with different height differences with each trial (2 in, 3 in, and 4 in). When each reaction is placed we will then record the highest temperature the water heated too. Then we will measure the the cheeto and record the after reaction mass. Then using the nutritional value 160 cal per 28 grams we will use the equation (accepted - experimental divided by accepted multiplied by 100) to get the percent error. We think that our percent error will be relatively lower, and our hypothesis will be…

The first step is analyzing the serving size. The size of the serving on the food package influences the number of calories and nutrient amounts listed on the top part of the label. If a package of chips had a serving size label of one cup and a total of two servings per bag, all of the nutritional information would double if you ate the entire bag. The second step is checking the amount of calories. The number of servings determines the number of calories you eat. Calories are essential to generating energy; however someone who wants to lose weight should consider lowering their caloric intake. Step three and four consist of limiting unhealthy nutrients and eating healthier nutrients. Nutrients to limit are saturated fat, Trans fat, cholesterol and sodium. Nutrients to consume more of consist of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, and Iron. Step five of understanding food labels is “understanding the footnote at the bottom of the label”. Generally the percent daily value is based on a 2,000 a day calorie diet. However, not everyone is on a 2,000 a day calorie diet. It is important to calculate the percent value according to your own personal diet. Step six is the percent daily value. The percent daily value already does the math to calculate how much of a nutrient is present in the food via percentage. In order to understand a healthy percentage of a nutrient listed on the label, simply apply the aforementioned 5/20…

At first it was seen as a simple and innocent creation, but later on took a toll on the children. I was able to discuss the Hot Cheetos topic with my cousin Guadalupe and understand the effects these chips caused her. At first she did not feel any sort of symptoms or pains, but little by little, she began experiencing a pain in her stomach. She began throwing-up everything she ate, right after eating the chips. She would spend sleepless nights getting up and down, just to throw up, because Hot Cheetos irritated her stomach way too much! “As soon as I ate Hot Cheetos, I would feel my stomach begin to burn up, but I did not understand why. If everyone else could eat them, why couldn’t I. Sometimes I wondered if I was the only one.”Clearly she wasn’t the only one, and her stomach pains had a…

A particularly important controlled variable in this experiment was the type or batch of potatoes. This is because; often potatoes sold on the same supermarket may come from different places and therefore affect the experimental results. Another controlled variable was the place in which potatoes were placed; they were placed under the same sunlight/shade, same room temperature and general area of the class. This was done with a final objective of making the environment equal to all potato samples undergoing the experiment. Finally, another important controlled variable was the amount of time that each potato was left in solution.…

The purpose of the lab is to see how different size potatoes have faster water movement depending on the concentration of sucrose it was placed in. We had two sized potatoes, 6g and 10g, and placed each in three different dilutions of sucrose at 0.5M, 0.1M, and 0.05M. We also placed a 6g and 10g potato piece in water to act as a control. Based on the weight percent change over 60 minutes, the 6g potato piece had faster water movement than the 10g. This confirms out hypothesis that smaller potato pieces will have a faster rate of water movement.…
