Generally considered to be one of the most notable of the sacred hymns contained within the book of Psalms, Psalm 139 is perhaps one of the most sublime declarations of the omnipresence of God found in the Bible. Attested to David, Psalm 139 is classified as an “Individual Hymn of Thanksgiving” 1 a genre in which God is praised for the singers’ delivery from oppression and various life-threatening illnesses while also acting as a “Wisdom” psalm, celebrating the creative goodness of God. While the actual date of the text remains unclear as it is notoriously difficult to determine a date and historical context for every psalm, most scholars agree that the hymn was written during the time of King David’s reign, there is however, some dispute among…

Many worshippers of God like to believe that he is intrinsically good; this means that he is good in himself. People try to argue this by the Bible and through many things in the Bible such as the 10 commandments and the creation of the universe as well as the many miracles of the Saints. God is seen to act morally good as he creates a world which is seen to be good, therefore he must be. “God saw that it was good, and it was good.”…

Mary Rowlandson was a puritan woman from Massachusetts in the colonial times of America, which were known as the British colonies. During her time, a war occurred which was called Metacom’s War or King Philip’s War. Rowlandson was captured by the Wampanoag Indians that attacked her town of Lancaster. She wrote a story about what happened to her during her time being imprisoned, the book she wrote is called The Sovereignty and Goodness of God. In the story she reveals how she felt about the Indian tribe and she explains that being a saint and following God is what is keeping her alive. She uses many Scriptures that go along with what she is dealing with to help her get by day to day. The colonists were…

Ministry and evangelization in 2012 must be embraced by people who believe in Jesus Christ and who live to be His hands and heart. All actions, all inactions and all words spoken are an opportunity to live and preach the gospel. St. Francis of Assisi is quoted “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” It is through our daily living that we bring the Good News to everyone we know and meet. Opportunities to evangelize to people who may or may not know Jesus are abundant. A baseball team and a baseball game are beautiful metaphors for life and for the Good News of the gospel. Through sport, whether playing, coaching, administering, mentoring or officiating, the actions of Jesus can be found. As more and more people do not actively participate in a religious organization, disciples must look for meaningful and relevant ways to draw people back to God with our actions. In our North American culture, many behaviors, phrases and sayings come from baseball, just as many come from the bible. Ironically, many people do not realize that they are referring to either one. The rules of living a life honoring God our Father are outlined in the bible in both the Old and New Testament. In Paul’s letter to the Philippians 3:14 he says: “I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God’s upward calling, in Jesus Christ.” In Luke 9:25 Luke puts perspective on winning and losing with “What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself.” In baseball, the rules are spelled out in rule books, with the effects and consequences described in detail. In many circumstances, we may be uncertain of the interpretation of a guideline or a rule. In the Church, we have the Magisterium and the Catechism to assist our understanding and in baseball we have governing bodies and umpires. We cannot live or act in isolation based on our own interpretation of the rules. We must reach out, listen…

A Christ figure is a technique used in story-telling that is an allusion between the book’s character and Jesus Christ. Before I read the book A Separate Peace by John Knowles the idea of a Christ figure was unbeknownst to me. After some research, I found that there are many Christ figures, not only in literature but in films as well. Mufasa, Frodo, Superman, E.T., Optimus Prime & McMurphy were among my favorites. Themes and Symbols are an amazing part of story telling and the Christ figure has opened up a new interpretation of stories to me. Finny’s representation of a Christ figure is one of the best portrayals I’ve seen. Finny is God.…

In What would you do?, Yoder combines outsider arguments and stories about nonviolence in order to strengthen his argument defending pacifism. In Gladys Aylward's story, You Say You Have the Living God Inside You, she offers a moving account of her time in China, and tells a story from when she was a missionary woman. Aylward explains her immediate fear to get involved in a prison riot, but she knew that she must advocate for peace in order to maintain her claim that she had the living god within her. The juxtaposition of stories and arguments allows for the combination of theoretical advice about pacifism as well as real life examples that prove their ability to work. Pacifists do not claim that nonviolence always works, however the collection…

The prioritization of feeling over thinking in our culture today can be attributed, at least in part, to the shift in language from I think to I feel like. In many cases, I feel like has replaced I think. “I feel like penguins live on the North Pole.” “I feel like we went to Chick-Fil-A last week.” “I feel like that’s wrong.” “I feel like that lamp is too dim.” These are all statements that I could hear in a conversation with my peers this weekend. “Feeling” that something isn’t right allows you to not confront another person regarding their life choices and gives the feeler an exemption from thinking. Arrogantly, we have left thought behind for the sake of feeling good about ourselves.…

Via Negativa is a way of talking about God in only negative terms. For example, God is not mortal; or God is not human. Both of these tell what God is not, instead of what he is. This is because our knowledge of God is limited by our finite human understanding, therefore, as God is out of this Universe, we find it extremely hard to talk about him. Saint Augustine said “If you comprehend, it is not God. If you are able to comprehend, it is because you mistake something else for God.” Via Negativa allows us to compare God to things within our Universe that we understand, allowing us a sense of recognition with God, however not allowing us to reach a full understanding. This simple recognition is meaningful enough for many, including the like of Maimonides and Pseudo-Dionysius. Other philosophers believe that this negative way of speaking about God, is not the only meaningful way to talk of him. These will be discussed further within the essay.…
