How Has Brannon Impacted My Life
In Branson, I spent my days outside, and with my friends. Although the complex wasn’t all that friendly. My brother and I were blamed for everything, so our father kept us inside making it impossible for other to blame us. Even though we never left the house, we still got blamed for things. So eventually I stopped caring for people and the outside world. It impacted my life because now I don’t trust anyone and I hate the outdoors. I became a shut in, and all I do is play video games or watch videos on my phone. Recently some family that still live there came to visit, and their car was all scratched up. I asked who did it and they said it was the Mexicans that still live there. It was the people who blamed us for everything.

They rarely talked to me or spent time with me. As a result, I spent most of my early childhood alone. Over time, I began to like being alone, spending most of my time either in my room or outside in the nearby boroughs of Queens. I was happy with the way that my life was now. This made it much more of a shock to me when my mother came to me one day with terrible news.…

I lived in a small town named Harlem, and it was nice in the summer, but it ends up getting too hot in the summers. Most people here are people hanging out windows, people on fire escapes, and anywhere trying to get a cool breeze. Harlem was a town that you could get a job for a day and that's it pretty much it. I loved playing the saxophone, so I tried to use that to get money but it didn't work as well as I planned. My dad says I should get a part-time job, but I wanted full time to get extra money. I finally got a job at this business and I finally thought it would have been great. Then after awhile, it started to get harder to wake up and get to work. Then I meet Fats and that's when everything went south. Fats was someone that had a bootleg…

Growing up in rural Kansas was boring. Especially since I grew up in the seventies. There were no cell phones or game systems to occupy my time. My family had an old black and white television set. I loved to watch The Price is Right in the days before Bob Barker’s hair turned white. After the show was over, the only way to kill time was to play outside and wander down to the creek that ran parallel to our property. There was a secret trail buried in the wall of trees that lined our two acre yard. My brother and I would slide down the trail, landing on the dirt banks like explorers on a mission. Sometimes we would hunt for crawdads under rocks. Other times we would take our poles and fish. We never went into the water after the time I got bit by a gar.…

Lawrence, Kansas, the city in which I went to college, is roughly 35 square miles, where as Juneau is over 2,500 square miles. We also only have around 30,000 people here, Lawrence had about 90,000 people in it. I miss Lawrence so much, the feeling of being surrounded by like minded people, stores, and restaurants goes unmatched. Here I see very few people. My day to day interactions usually involve the people I work with, and my family. Everyone is very republican and private. Everyone owns a gun and goes to church with it every Sunday. Why they think they need to bring a gun to church is beyond. Back in lawrence I would meet tons of like minded individuals every day. Id wake up and go to my favorite book store, then have coffee with friends, and maybe catch a show that night. Here we have one bookstore, with a very sad selection mostly covering topics such as hunting and fishing. Here they call it game, but I call it lame. Also everybody here is so old. I miss being surrounded by young blood. The median age here is 37, compared to Lawrence which has a median age of 27. People are constantly talking about the weather, everyday it’s cold, I don't understand how a topic like this can be interesting to anyone, it seriously never…

In the beginning of 2005, my family decided to move away from California. My dad was offered a job in Phoenix, Arizona for Casino Arizona’s Black Jack dealer. When I heard the news that we were moving, I was upset, angry, furious, vexed. We just started our lives here and my dad wanted to pack everything up and leave. I was four at the time and I had started preschool, making new friends and now I have to leave all of that to move to Arizona. I didn’t know what to expect life in Arizona would be like. I was not happy. I cried for days because California is my home, this apartment was my home. Then I remembered, my family is my home. There was a bright side to moving to Arizona. I could finally get out of the cold weather. Every time I went outside, my jacket…

Imagine being stripped away from everything you knew: your childhood friends; cousins you thought you'd always have with you, and places you called your second, third, or even fourth home. That is exactly what I went through when my family decided to move to Albuquerque, New Mexico. What's different about my experience was that it wasn't necessarily the move that flipped my world upside down but everything that happened in between. I was an awkward, shy, midget-like twelve-year-old when my family and I lost our home during the California money crisis. From that point on it was like a tumbling circus act. My parents ended up losing their jobs until finally my dad moved to New Mexico; leaving me and my family for almost a year. The last thing…

Growing up in the safety of a neighborhood highly populated with children, the back yard was my kingdom. Its vast expanse gave me hours of tag and hide and seek, not to mention catching countless butterflies. I remember the feeling of the heat of the summer months pouring down on me and my friends like it was yesterday, probably because I still feel the same way about the outdoors now. One of the biggest memories I have of my old neighborhood is the hill we used to live on. We rolled down the hill, ran up the hill, sledded down the hill, and lived on that hill all year round. I remember the challenge of running up that giant hill. I recently visited the place I used to live, the hill that used to seen so big to me now looked like a tiny slope. Funny how those things change when perception changes…

I’ll never forget having to leave my friends and family behind and having to move across the country. It was the summer of 2008, and I was 10 years old at the time. The huge brown boxes, indicated the progressive yet subtle hints of our departure. I did not know why my father took the job in Washington D.C., but I did know that I resented him for it. However, it wasn’t long before I realized the move was for my own good. Back in California, my family lived in a tightly cramped two bedroom and one bathroom apartment. I soon realized moving to Virginia gave my family unspeakable opportunities, those that some take for granted, such as being able to live in a single family home. Coming to Virginia was similar to coming to a foreign country. The roads were different, the people were different, and the atmosphere was different; everything seemed foreign.…

For the first two months of my freshman year there wasn't a single piece of furniture on the floor so I couldn't print out papers for school because the printer wasn't set up, I couldn't sleep on my bed but on the mattress itself. The whole process was very irritating and stressful all I could do was hope I didn't fail my first semester and unfortunately I didn't have many friends to help me. When we finally got settled after a year living in Arlington, TX my parents decided to yet again move to a new house because they didn't feel comfortable and neither did my sister and I. During my sophomore year in high school we moved to Dallas, TX a little bit closer to our school. It was annoying to move into another house again We had to pack everything once again and undergo the process of moving from one house to the…

Social location, or the status in life that people have because of their place in a society, have a huge impact on everyone. The impact that social location created could be neutral, but most of the time it will have a positive or negative impact on people. For example, an African American could be discriminated because of his ethnicity, or a patient will choose an older doctor when he needs a treatment. Different social location that we have will affect our decisions in everyday life, and most of the time it happened subconsciously, which means we don’t realize that the decisions we make are based on our social location. Like everyone else, I was affected by my own social location, both positively and negatively.…

The building I used to live in was beautiful safe and since it was a bit old everyone knew each other. I lived there for 6 years so I considered everyone there my distant family. We all did our laundry at the same Laundromat, shopped for groceries at the same place and most of the kids went to the same school in the neighborhood. I didn’t appreciate the door man in my building who would be there every day all the time to help me with the door or packages, the elderly Liberian who used to watch after me at the library I grew up at as a child, My neighbors borrowing me items I was so too lazy to go buy myself I didn’t appreciate the train being so close to me, the friendly man at the super market, Or My building and all it meant to me. I lived in North Philadelphia when I was younger. There were many ways the community was not healthy, but one thing that is important to note is safety. Olney district of Philadelphia has one of the highest crimes in Philadelphia. Shootings, child molestations, and theft were common in the area, which limited me to lead a healthier life. My brother and I stayed inside our home watching television often, which limited the ability for us to lead a healthier life. Before rise of the crime, my brother and I always played in the neighbor, rode our bikes, and went to the park right behind our house. We met a lot of the neighborhood kids, and got our daily exercise from playing. The short-term consequence was lack of socialization and heavy boredom. Both of our parents worked all day, and our grandmother took care of us most of the time. Since the crimes started, it was difficult to stay outside the neighborhood and talk to our friends, as well as, utilize the park and bikes. I believe the crimes also started to build up anxiety and fear within the community, including us, and there were more stress, anger, frustration due to the crimes. In the long run, we moved to the suburbs, with more green area and kids our age to play “again”, and my parents felt stress free within the safe community…
