How Has Honor Changed

Respect, dignity, duty; these are just few words to represent the concept of honor. Without honor where would our morals be we would be savage beast fighting for power instead of respectful men and women fighting for their country. Honor has changed over the years but one thing that will always stay with the concept of honor is the humanity that goes with it. Even with many different views of honor and culture diffusions that the concept of honor has taken it will always be a word to describe the respect, dignity, and duty of a human.
In the past honor was a more used word or term. The more honor you had the more respect was given to you. In an article from the website The Art of Manliness states “During times when the rule of law was weak, and professional military and law enforcement bodies did not exist, honor acted as the moral force that governed the tribe and maintained its survival”(Manliness). Having honor in the past was like getting followed by millions on instagram in today's time. Honor back then wasn’t
just something that was given to you like today you had to earn it with your deeds and morals. In an article by Shalin Punn in the New York Sun he says, “Indeed, over the last 30 years, the old notion of honor has even become "shameful." The influence of the "media and celebrity culture" has reversed that notion to almost the "complete opposite" of what it once meant”(Punn). From committing a seppuku (Samurai killing himself for his honor) to being a respected loyal person in modern day. The western world has changed the meaning of honor and the way it is being used.
The code of honor has shifted from the code in the past to the 20st century. In an article the decline of honor written by Kate Mcay states “The more diverse Western societies became, the greater the chance that a man’s personal values of faith and philosophy would not exactly align with the cultural honor code, increasing the likelihood of men opting out of certain provisions of the latter when they contradicted their conscience”(Mcay). With the western world becoming more judgmental with race, religion and philosophy people started to loose connections with each other. This lead to conflict and know one there to judge the code of honor if everyone lost it. In the art of manliness article Mcay says”Traditional honor codes are designed to motivate people to adhere to a standard that the group believes promotes its best interest”(Mcay). There is still honor from the past that is used today like bravery from men and chastity for women but it has changed and is lost in movies and history books.
The American Dream is a big thing to cover it is sort of the fight for freedom. Veterans and soldiers who fought and fight for that dream have respect from around America and the world. They are some of the most honored men ever to live; you could also say that celebrities who have respect around the world and is worshipped by millions are honorable because they donate 0.001% of their wealth to charity but is that right? In an article by the imaginative conservative Jeremy A. Kee says “Either that which is considered honorable today would be so considered in the era of knights and kings, or else it is not today, nor was it then, nor will it ever be considered an act of honor”(Kee). Americans Honor is to have someone's respect. Has America crossed a line between having money and being famous to someone who has or should have earned respect for his acts and deeds? Kee also said “ If one is right from a legal point of view, nothing more is required”(kee). American has a problem with who deserves the honor but they also have a problem with why no one needs this anymore. They follow what is written on laws. America believes if isn't against the law then we can do it and they leave behind the natural law or natural judgment. This leads to people who don't give others respect and get none in return and yet they still do not care. That is the problem and is what has happened to America. We have lost our honor and we have lost our idea of the American Dream.
This leads into wars and conflicts and hate crimes.
With every county having a different idea with what honor is they believe that others are dirty filthy beast that need to be changed, In an article by world wide trends they right about honor killings “Most honor killings are not classified as such, are rarely prosecuted, or when prosecuted in the Muslim world, result in relatively light sentences”(trends). Middle east countries have some killing people for honor it's just a few extremist but they aren't even sentences to punishment or lightly punished most countries around the world would have them sentenced to many years in prison or death. This just shows how much conflict this causes many countries. Middle East countries probably think we are the evil ones with no honor while we think that they are the evil ones that kill the innocent and know one can say which is right. We can either follow are past honor codes or the new non existence code
today. Honor is still the respect,dignity and duty of humans but is it something we have lost thru the ages or is it hidden behind all of are pointless wars, conflicts and fake celebrities? Are world is always changing in some way. By the smallest things like a 5 letter word that's meaning is being changed every day. The world can repeat history by following an old code that could be lost in time or we can create a new code.With a concept of respect, dignity, and duty because without these how can we call ourselves better than apes.
