Our military has evolved massively since the days of our Forefathers and is still growing every day. There are three key events where the American Military was improved and/or evolved setting a path for a more organized, trained, well-equipped, and respected Military. The events that will be discussed regarding the American Military was the Civil War, Mahan’s lectures, and the development of American Air Force. All of which greatly impacted the efficiency and success of the military and gave the United States great foundation for developing and advancing.
Prior to the American Civil War (1861-1865), the country had a small Standing Army that relied heavily on the State Militias to augment forces in the times of need. The North was able to gain control of the majority of the Standing Army, whereas the South had to rely more heavily on State militias to build an Army. The Civil War evolved our military into one standing army, and brought use concepts of total war. These practices became part of the strategic toolbox of the way of war. The Emanicaption Proclamation created a more diverse and open military for all who wanted to fight for their country. It brought the military more manpower at its disposal and widened the band of citizens to think of themselves as not as different but Americans. Mahan’s lectures introduced the idea of a great navy that started the thought of becoming more global and more influential in the world. The introduction of American Aviation formed more strategies of organized warfare and support the start of the amphibious Warfare with the marines made a more skilled and purposed division inside the
