How Has Volleyball Changed Over Time
The History of volleyball has changed very much since when it was first invented but the changes were probably for the better. Volleyball is a male and female sport where there are opportunities for both to play and be successful in. I think it is a very fun and interesting sport to play.
Volleyball was created by a man named William G. Morgan about four years after basketball was invented. It was originally a combination of baseball, basketball, Tennis and handball, and was called Mintonette. It was played on nets that were six feet six inches. With teams of six, two or four. people on the court that played to twenty one, until it was later changed to 15. In the year 1900 a special ball was invented to play with. Now when you’re playing you

As an example nobody used the forearm pass unless you were very desperate, otherwise all they would do to pass the ball was to set, or an over the head pass. Now you use the forearm pass all the time to get the ball to the setter or over the net. Another thing that changed was what number you played to. At first they would play to 21, then it got changed to 15. But now volleyball games are played to 25 unless you are going for a tie breaker match which is then played to 15. Another thing that has changed over the years is the court's dimensions. It used to be 25 by 50 feet long, now it is 30 by 60 feet long and centerlines were also added to the courts recently. Originally the nets were set at 6’6 so it was just above men’s heads but now men's standard height is 7 feet 11 inches and for women 7 feet 4 inches. Also in rotations back row people could just come up and spike or hit the ball over the net, until rules were set that they can not jump after the ten foot line if they want to hit from the back row. The volleyball itself has also changed a lot over the years. At first it was an ugly brown leathery thing that was durable to play outside with, but now the leather that is used to make volleyball is very high quality that only certain balls are used to playing inside with. The balls also have way better grip and you can adjust the amount of air that goes into the ball to determine how hard

Basketball was invented in December 1891 by the Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician James Naismith. Naismith introduced the game when we were an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. At the request of his superior, Dr. Luther H. Gulick, he organized a vigorous recreation suitable for indoor winter play. The game involved elements of American football, soccer, and hockey, and the first ball used was a soccer ball. Teams had nine players, and the goals were wooden peach baskets affixed to the walls. By 1897-1898, teams of five became standard. The game rapidly spread nationwide and to Canada and other parts of the world, played by both women and men; it also became a popular informal outdoor game. U.S. servicemen in World War II (1939-1945) popularized the sport in many other countries.…

Although volleyball may seem like the same sport whether it’s played on an indoor volleyball court or an outdoor sand volleyball court, there is actually a big difference between the two. Some people prefer sand volleyball over court volleyball, but I prefer court volleyball. Both courts are the same size (18m x 9m (29'6" x 59')). When it comes to having all of the positions covered, court volleyball is superior; with six people on the court, it is much easier to defend the entire area.…

The ancient balls that were used by the native americans were originally the same as the sticks, being made from wood. But the ball even back then evolved and was later made with deer skin stuffed with fur. The traditional ball and stick were also the only pieces of equipment the Native Americans used. In ancient lacrosse there was no protective helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, or even most importantly no cup!…

The first reason boys are not allowed to play girls volleyball is because boys muscle mass is much greater compared to girls. Research shows that boys have “ an average of 72.6 pounds of muscle compared to the 46.2 pounds found in women” (Cespedes 1). This is a huge factor when playing volleyball. On average with more muscle weight boys can jump higher and hit harder. When boys jump higher they can get a better reach on the ball, which…

My middle school volleyball coach has been the most influential person in my life. In 6th grade I had never picked up a volleyball until the day of tryouts. Miraculously I made the team. Coach Brittany helped to build up my confidence and helped to greatly build up my skills. I made the team again in seventh grade. This year turned out to be a bit harder. I was suppose to play middle front, which I loved dearly, but I didn't understand the transitions off the net, so she got mad at me in front of everyone and switched my position. It was one of the most embarrassing and humbling experiences of my life. That year I learned to love a position that I originally hated and Coach Brittany said to me, " When you're not the best, if you work hard,…
