It could be argued that the monarch was an important member of government however some may disagree and put forward the idea that the Privy Council was more important. This is for several reasons the first reason (for the monarch) was the fact that she could decide who could become a member of the Privy Council this is because it meant that she had total power over those who that would help run the country. However this did not mean that the monarch was the most important figure as it could be argued that the monarch did in fact have a ‘Back Seat’ with regards to running the country as historians could argue that it was the privy council, as opposed to the queen, that did the main portion of running the country as was with William Cecil who was worked (quite literally) up until his death. Elizabeth even fed him broth on his death bed further highlighting his importance in the running of the country and his importance to Elizabeth.
The Privy Council was responsible for the general administration of the country. Who was on the Council depended on Elizabeth, but as some of the nobles of her realm had a lot of power, Elizabeth had to make sure that the most powerful men in her country had their interests represented. One of these powerful men was William Cecil whom of which was regarded as one of the best at his job at the time. Yet his success in his job of running the country, it could not last forever. Therefore Williams’s son had to take his place – his name was Robert Cecil. Others argued that this was a main reason for the monarch being more important as once the first generation of ministers had died then their sons usually took their place and it quickly became apparent that they were not in fact as good as their predecessors either due to lack of experience or just a lack of skill, none the less Robert did not stand up to the job nearly as well as someone such as William Cecil. Therefore the Queen had to work just that
