How Is Atticus Learned In To Kill A Mockingbird
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is a small town lawyer and a single parent raising two children. Atticus is a strong, intelligent, white male in his forties. He was raised in a Christian home and believes in treaty people fairly and with respect. Even though Atticus is a lawyer, he does not make much money in the town that he lives. He is not necessarily poor but he does not have much money either. His life revolves around his children and he loves them dearly. Atticus teaches his children many valuable lessons by treating them with respect and talking to them in a stern yet loving voice. He speaks to his children as if they were adults. He will honestly answer any question his children have. Atticus teaches his children about life and how to deal with problems they face in their community.

Atticus’s family becomes the target of many threats and taunts because he decides to defend a black man, Tom Robinson, who has been accused of raping a white woman. Almost everyone in town is against Atticus defending Tom. His children are soon teased at school. Atticus tells his children to ignore what people may say to them and not let ignorant remarks bother them. The children listen to their father because they know he is a smart man and will always be there for them and protect them. Atticus not only shows courage but perseverance as well. He knows that most people in town are racist but he defends Tom anyway. By doing this, he knows that he will be putting his reputation, life, and his children’s lives in danger. Atticus represents morality, reason, and
bravery.
Atticus never doubts his views or feelings. However, his weak point is that he is insecure when it comes to parenting. He believes his children should be raised by someone more traditional and more experienced. Atticus believes that his daughter Scout is too much of a “tomboy”, and he thinks that his son Jim should be more of a “boy”. Atticus also teaches his children that they should not take advantage of those less fortunate or less educated. For example, if a person is unable to pay for services, Atticus will accept things like food instead of money. Atticus also believes that animals are less fortunate and refuses to hunt or let his children hunt.
Atticus believes in the justice system but he does not like criminal law. However, he decided to accept Tom Robinson’s case. He knows that he will probably lose but accepts the case anyway. Atticus puts everything he has into the case because he knows Tom is innocent. It does not matter to Atticus that Tom is a black man because he believes the court system should be “color blind”. Atticus also believes that people should work for what they have and not accept charity. This belief would hinder him from receiving any kind of human service help. He would rather give to those that are less fortunate than to receive any help himself. Atticus is the type of person that would give someone the shirt off his back.
Someone in the human service field may recommend a program for Atticus that lets clients work for their benefits. In Virginia there is a program called the VIEW program. This program helps clients find jobs. The program also pays for clients to return to school so they can further their education. The VIEW program also provides transportation to those that need a ride to work or school. Atticus would like this program because he believes that education is the most important thing someone can have in life. Atticus would also feel like he was doing something instead of receiving charity.
Someone in the human service field may recommend that he talk to a counselor about his feelings of being a bad parent. Atticus and his children may also need to talk to someone about their mother and wife passing away. The results someone might expect from Atticus are that it is all right to receive help from others. The counselor will show him what a wonderful job he is doing as a father. He will be more confident as a parent. Overall, Atticus is a strong, moral, brave, loving, and intelligent person. He is the type of person who we all look up to and strive to be.

Some people even believe that people are poor because they choose to be. Some people think that if they would go to school or work harder they would have more. This is clearly not true. Atticus is an exceptional example of why some people are poor. He would rather sacrifice things for himself to help others. Atticus is also highly educated and extremely intelligent. There are people like Atticus all over the world.
Another misperception is that most African Americans are poor. Some people are biased and believe that most African Americans and Mexicans are on welfare. The fact is, only 29% of African Americans account for the poor in the United States (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1990a). It is important to remember the different personalities and beliefs of clients in the human service field. Some people, like Atticus, desperately need help but are too proud to ask for it or except it. Client’s needs are based on housing, food, medical issues, and financial problems. The human service provider has to figure out how to help the client based on their beliefs. For example, a client needs help applying for a job.
