Sriaght-laced
Aunt Alexandra is very fashionable and ladylike, with all her manners and dresses. Trying to teach Scout to be lady like and wear a dress is difficult since Scout sees her style as weird and making her unfriendly. “I guess it was her Sunday corset” (128). Aunty dresses all tight and proper, with lace and old fashion things. She’s always got the right manners, and fits in really well with the other ladies in Maycomb, like Miss.Stephanie, but she is very stiff to the children. Always telling Scout what she should be wearing Sunday dresses and playing with tea sets, makes her prim. …show more content…
Even with all the right manners and courtliness, like kissing her family when she greets them at Christmas, she’s still very starchy.
Proper, lady like, fasionable, wants to take charge
Austere
Acting all in charge, and not wanting Jem and Scout to go some places or have certain people over, shows Aunt Alexandra’s bossiness. Her proper character makes her seem like she has everything right, as she takes the role of the mother. Yet, in all reality she doesn’t have any understanding and is always finicky. “ Aunty had a way of declaring What Is Best For The family, and I suppose her coming to live with us was in that category” (129). Alexandra isn’t the greatest with the kids and never had a girl herself, so she doesn’t understand her niece. Also, Aunt Alexandra never keeps good conversations with the children. Plus it’s hard to like even being around Aunty with all her austerness.
Tough love
Aunt Alexandra shows very little love and it’s hard to see how she would even love anybody. Even when she comes over to stay at Jem and Scouts house and Scout asks if she’ll miss her family she doesn’’t reply. But every few moments she shows caring for the family and that she wants what’s good for them. “‘I can’t say I approve of everything he does, Maudie, but he’s my brother… it tears him to pieces” (236) Without showing emotion she breaks down, knowing her Atticus is going through tough things. Even when she gives Scout a chance to sit with the ladies and practise manners is her showing some mercy and giving Scout a chance. She came to stay with the family because in her heart, she knows they need some help and attempts Scouts proper bringing. It’s just that her personality doesn’t show it since she’s got that unfriendliness.
Aunt Alexandra’s prissy attitude makes her not the greatest character.
She’s discriminating people all the time, and not much of an encouragment. Brother to Atticus, but doesn’t seem to even be related at all or show much love, does happen to care about others. Even with all her nagging and pushing, she does keep Scout in proper order. Only thing is her style and etiquette makes her a little too proper and unlovable. Wearing a corset she shows her southern ladylike and knowledge of etiquette, but is finicky and a love to hate character. She doesn’t have enough understanding of the children, especially daughters. Unfriendliness blocks her relationship with people. Sraight-laced, austere and tough loving makes her unusual for an Aunt and overall she isn’t an immense character in the
book.
