How Is Discretion Used In The Classroom
I read about the exercise of discretion and it caught my attention because it is a quality that one as a teacher uses in the classroom every day. As there is so much one to one interactivity with the students, a teacher must be discreet about what one hears and use judgement about how they are to teach the students. Discretion is also used in deciding what materials and teaching direction will be taught, given the wide variety of resources there are and all the different regulations from either districts to state wide policies that must be used correctly. It is an ongoing, difficult choice as to how a teacher prepares to teach their students as No Child Left Behind has come into effect and has modified how things should be taught. As a result

We are writing to you to advocate for the continuance of Miss. Degenhardt’s (Profe) teaching career at Darien High School. We write with the purpose to make you aware of Profe’s profound impact on the community and the growth of her students both in the context of academics and ethics; her notable qualities and dedication to her profession are of a role model. While Profe’s style of teaching is unorthodox at some points, this unorthodoxy provides students with a diverse and meaningful education in an otherwise, orthodox day. A quality that is central to Profe’s teaching and persona is her receptiveness to student opinion, which in our opinion should be a constant in all student-teacher relationships. For example, if a student feels that a decision in terms of either a grade or punishment she made was unjust, Profe is fully open to a one-on-one discussion, either during a mutual free or before or after school. Profe’s actions reject the notion of “my way or the highway” and epitomize the characteristic of open-mindedness: a quality that is crucial in our increasingly globally connected society. For a personal anecdote, during a student’s sophomore year he felt that he did not deserve grade X; therefore, he approached Profe and asked to meet with her before school. The student and Profe discussed the grade and while the grade remained unchanged, he had a better understanding as to why he received grade X and how he can avoid receiving grade X in the future. In another, unrelated circumstance, Profe organizes an annual in-class food drive to afford families in the Bronx a decent Thanksgiving meal, which reveals her altruism and devotion to paying it forward. Moments such as these are what define Profe’s impact and overall career to DHS and academia. As a community, we are here to support a teacher who has supported us. Thank you in advance for your time.…

In order to provide the competent circumstances we have to make sure that the students are in a safe environment, regarding their health as well as their privacy. Regarding their health and their safety, the teacher has to follow policies and rules. For example it can be necessary to do a risk assessment before a lesson. Regarding the privacy of students we pointed out that it could be a very serious moral and ethical issue if we had to estimate whether it is right to share personal informations about our pupil (with other teachers for example). If a family issue is influencing our pupil's achievements, when is the time to share that private information and when is it not. When is it right and when is it wrong? Students are entitled to privacy but when do teachers have a say in the matter?…

    Choice and Discretion

To define discretion is a pretty easy task. Discretion is something you use before you do something. Discretion means to decide to do the right thing before you do the wrong thing for example you would use discretion to decide when you see a person acting strange on the street would you go over to ask that person if they are alright or would you just make the choice to walk away. Discretion is used because it gives us the ways to make a choice if we need to. We use discretion in everyday life we use it because it tells us whether it is the wrong way to do something or the right way to do something. The choice is up to us. The officer used discretion by choosing to apprehend the suspect after she thought the bike was stolen. She used discretion by chasing after him and trying to apprehend him and struggling with him to try to apprehend him. I do feel however that the officer should have let him run after the third attempt to apprehend him. I do feel that pulling the gun for a minor offense and the suspect not having a gun was not a good discretion. The factors for the officer using the discretion she chose to use were that the man continued to walk away and not answer the officer. After that factor the man decided to drop the bike and run making it look like he stole the bike. The officer struggling with him was also a factor she chose to pursue also by him fighting with her it made the officer have to use more discretion and finally ended with her pulling her gun and killin him. I feel the officer should have aimed for his leg or even arm rather then kill him it was a minor violation that she was pursuing him for. I feel that up until the shooting the officer used good discretion by chasing him you would have foun what the problem was in the first place and it was her job to assume that the bike was stolen after the suspectsactions. Even with the struggling I found it to be good discretion since the suspect was being violent and attacking her for doing her job.…

Sentencing and punishment has actively involved the discretion of judges and magistrates in affecting the decision of the sentencing. Discretion involves the power of Judges and magistrates to determine the most appropriate sentence for a case. Allowing judicial officers to decide sentences on a case by case basis and thus permitting them to take into account the various circumstances. Many factors influence the role discretion plays or alternatively doesn’t play in the sentencing and punishment of offenders.
