How Is Dou Similar To The Old Woman Reading Rembrandt
Gerrit Dou:
Dou was a follower and apprentice to the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt. He often used the themes that Rembrandt painted for his own works. This piece, the Old Woman Reading a Bible (c.1630) is very similar to Rembrandt's own Old Woman Reading (1631). Dou was very similar to Rembrandt in style, he seems to be more detailed and meticulous in his execution. His scenes of domestic, bourgeois life were tremendously popular.
The woman is in this painting seems to be sitting in near-darkness. She is reading a story from her Bible about the entry of Jesus into Jericho, an episode from the Gospel. The illustration in the Bible shows Simon the tax collector, who climbed a tree to observe the event. Jesus, who is shown looking up at

The three portraits that are being exhibited at the Dunham Bible Museum are breathtaking, these paintings touched my heart and were the reasons why I chose to write about these paintings: The Messiah, the detailed portrait of Jesus crucified, it shows the love that God has for us, to send Jesus, his only son to save us, to save me, and that his death has given humanity a chance to redeem ourselves, as well the words "Father forgive them" are so powerful as it shows how pure Jesus heart was that he forgave us and died for our sins. He is truly our best example to follow. What are you doing for me? When I see this painting, somehow I can transport myself into many moments in my life when I didn't have God as a priority in my life but He is a…

Buigiardini’s Madonna and the Child with St. John the Baptist depicts Mary with Christ and St. John. The three figures are arranged in a triangle formation, with Mary at the apex. This positioning was often used by artists such a Leonardo da Vinci and can be seen in his work The Virgin of the Rocks. This painting also displays chiaroscuro, as the ground is composed of dark colors; browns, blues and reds, but the figures and the sky are much lighter. The figures are shown with very pale skin, which makes them stand out from the darker ground and the sky is an extremely light blue color. This technique helps the artists convey spatial depth. The baby Jesus is shown wearing a delicate golden halo, and is simultaneously grabbing the book that Mary is reading and pointing at the young John the Baptist. I thought that this might be a symbol of the importance of John the Baptist’s work in the Bible.…

The painting is of a close up scene occurring between two females and a male. Behind the people there are red curtains parting open. It is the only part of the back ground that is visible to the viewer. The rest is in dark shadows, with only the subjects being illuminated. The man is lying on a bed, while the women are standing to either side of him. The point of view for the viewer is as if they are standing behind the bed. Bigot’s painting depicts a scene from the book of Judith in the Catholic Old Testament.…

Recreations of biblical characters and their stories are common in the art world. However, the portrayal of demonized women, such as Jezebel or Delilah, is rarely done from a non-Hebrew perspective or from one that shows how their actions could be interpreted as good rather than cruel. In Kirk Richards' Delilah, the use of lighting, composition and symbolism within the painting mimic saintly portraiture to cast Delilah in a positive light as the savior of her people, instead of the common portrayal of her as a seductress or traitor. Through this depiction, Richards' shows the misogynistic and unjust nature of this story by changing the perspective from one that favors Samson to one that favors Delilah and the Philistines.…

In the painting God casually has his arm wrapped around a women who seems to be his lover. It was the authors natural accusation that the women was God’s wife. Then some one told the author that God was a women, and he became terribly confused. “If God is a women then who is that big, almost naked guy with his arm around her? In answering that question I found a beautiful religion, named Wicca.” God is within. The author then talks about the title of the book and why it is the way it is. The title of the book is A Wiccan Bible. It’s ‘A’ and not ‘The’ because he says it is not “The Bible” it’s not the only way to live or to believe. He states that it is just one way. It belongs to him, and he gave it to somebody, to share it with us. (words: 243)Garrett, LynnZaleski, Jeff. "WICCAN BELIEFS & PRACTICES (Book Review)." Publishers Weekly 248.13 (2001): 88. MAS Complete. Web. 5 May 2013. A Wiccan high priest, Cantrell, offers this volume as a general introduction to Wicca, aimed especially at people working individually or in small groups. He covers a great deal of ground, from the basics; the ritual calendar and standard spells, to more specialized topics, such as the uncertain practicality of replacing the traditional bound Grimoire with a Floppy Disk of Shadows. One chapter offers tips for the physically disabled pagan. Another draws upon the conclusions of his earlier book, "Out of the Broom Closet?…

During our tour at the Legion of Honor, we observed art starting from the early and High Renaissance. Next, we went to the Dutch Baroque period, British art, and ended at the impressionists. A most notable work of art from the tour was “The Annunciation” by Master of the Retable of the Reyes Católicos. This oil on wood panel painting was created in the late 1500s, during the High Renaissance period of the art historical cannon. It portrays the biblical event found in the Gospel of Luke in which the archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she is pregnant with Jesus, the son of God. “The Annunciation” is a religious painting and is an example of the many great works of art from the High Renaissance.…

Artemisia’s first painting was named, Susanna and the Elder, c 1610. She was seventeen when she painted it. Michelangelo had a major influence on her style. The painting depicts the biblical story of Susanna, a young wife who was sexually harassed by the elder of her community. She shows her as vulnerable and frightened, while the men are conspiring behind her. This painting was completed before the rape, but it might be a depiction of the harassment from Tassi. Eventually it hit me why I was drawn to this particular painting out of all the rest. It was the fact that probably no one else thought to wonder other then Tissot, what Jesus saw, or for that matter, what exactly was on his mind as he was nailed to a cross looking down on all the people that were looking up at him. Yet in Tissot’s mind’s eye, after reading this biblical story came up with the idea to paint this portrait from the viewpoint of Jesus. I find this to be absolutely amazing to come up with this idea.…

There a new movement of Renaissance art pervaded early Netherlandish art. During this time, many biblical scenes such as the Nativity and the Crucifixion were painted but none of them looked exactly like. It was very popular for the cross to being standing in the center of the painting, with the Virgin Mary, Saint John, and Mary Magdalene. However, Mary Magdalene is not pictured in The Crucifixion with Saints and A Donor. The life of Christ was a very important Christian theme in art and it is shown in the painting. The Crucifixion with Saints and A Donor not only represent the story of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, but also the whole story of salvation. Each person in the painting is somehow involved with the salvation. The Virgin Mary is the mother of Jesus, and she is a very important figure in the bible. She is the reason for the birth of Christ and the beginning of his salvation. The Virgin Mary is depicted in many Joos Van Cleve’s artwork such as The Annunciation and the many different portraits of The Holy Family. In the central panel is Saint John the Evangelist who making a gesture towards Christ on the cross, pointing towards the death and resurrection. He is an important figure in the bible because he is one of the apostles that wrote one of the Gospels in the bible. Next to John the Evangelist is, one Jesus’ closest and most loyal associates Saint Peter. When standing trial before Sanhedrin, Peter denied knowing him three times. After Jesus ascended, Peter was the first publicly to preach Christianity in Jerusalem. Holding the cross looking away from Jesus representing the denying of knowing Jesus and holding the head of Saint Paul who was also one of the apostles of Jesus. For Saint Paul, is one of the main reasons for the salvation of Jesus being everlasting because he sent many letters…
