How Is Elizabeth's Testimony Used Against Proctor?
1. Describe Danforth’s decisions in court through this act. Evaluate what type of person he is and his agenda with these court proceedings. Use textual evidence from at least two of Danforth’s decisions to support your response.

Danforth’s decsions in court are formal. He is a person who follows the books and tries to listen to both sides of the argument. However his religious beliefs take over and he begins to show less pity for the accused. This can be seen when Danforth claims Proctor is a witch, “What are you? ( Proctor is beyond speech in his anger.) You are combined with anti-Christ, are you not? I have seen your power; you will not deny it! What say you, Mister?” This shows how Danforth loses his judgemental skills as he becomes engulfed in his religious ideas

How is Elizabeth’s testimony used against Proctor? Why is this an unfair test of Elizabeth’s word against John’s? Evaluate Elizabeth’s decision.

Elizabeth claims that Proctor is not a lecher while he says he is. This is unfair, because they are both trying to be selfless and help the other. Elizabeths decsion wase wise because she was already accussed of being a witch so if she had nothing to lose if she got caught lying as she was already going to be punished.

5. How does Abigail turn the court against Mary Warren? What insight does this give you into Abigail’s personality?

Abigail acts like Mary Warren is casting witchcraft upon her. This shows how Abigail is mean and uses people for her own benefit.

6. Why does Hale denounce the proceedings? What should have been the effect of his denunciation? Why is it not?

Hale denounces the proceedings after he goes to all the accused and realises that they are all innocent. His denunciation should have stopped public support of the trials. People still believe in the trails because they lost faith in Hale. He had been hanging around with the accused and hadn’t stopped the witchcraft so people began to lose faith in

In the beginning of the play, Elizabeth has a tense, distant relationship with her husband because he had an affair with Abigail Williams, who is both the Proctors’ antagonist and uses pathos to cause strife between them. Elizabeth still had not been able to forgive John for this, causing their relationship to suffer. However, the accusations brought against them by Abigail force Elizabeth and John to pull together and unite against their accusers. She is able to move past John’s sin when saying, “John, it come to naught that I should forgive you, if you’ll not forgive yourself” (Miller 138). Elizabeth is able to let John know that she does not hold his sin against him anymore, and he should not as well. Elizabeth also changes from being an incredibly truthful person to one that is willing to lie to save her husband. When John is accused, he tells the court that he has committed adultery with Abigail, and this is why Abigail is accusing him. However, the court does not believe him, so John has Elizabeth brought out to prove to the court that her husband did indeed have an affair. Since Elizabeth has never lied before in her life,…

Even though being discovered was a concern it was lesser a problem to Proctor than the fact that innocent people, including his wife Elizabeth who was accused by Abigail, could be and are being accused of witchcraft. Despite John’s previous efforts, Abigail and her band of young women have the courts convinced, forcing John to tell the courts “I have known her” (to know meaning to have sexual relations with) in order to establish Abigail’s motives, seeing as the affair would establish Abigail as a liar in the sense that she lied about Elizabeth stabbing her (this was the way Abigail accused Elizabeth), discrediting Abigail once and for all (Miller 189). Discrediting Abigail would be a big deal since she was a great driving force to the mass hysteria. Had it not been for his love for the truth and strive for justice, these events would not have never been known. John had quite valid reasons to make these decisions, and seeing the background to these decisions and the hoped outcome, the reason was obvious, he could not see such injustice…

In the beginning of the play, John Proctor in known to have a relationship not only with Elizabeth (his wife) but also his house maid Abigail. Proctor has the power to stop the Salem witch trials at the very beginning by telling everyone that he is an adulterer, but is concerned about his reputation being bad in the society. He does not want to be looked down upon. This shows how society's outlook of people affect the decisions that Proctor makes. Elizabeth knows that her husband was an adulterer but does not tell anyone about this. She thinks that people will look down upon her for not being as attractive as Abigail; she also does not want to ruin the reputation of her husband because her husband’s reputation is her reputation and her family's. Even in court, Elizabeth Proctor does not confess. In addition to that, people had also accused Proctor of being a witch. Proctor would have to lie and say that he was with the devil and name some people that are still with the devil. The court wanted Proctor to sign his name so they could post it on the church door and in reaction he says, “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (Miller 143). This…

Proctor’s long term response to external influences to her ethical character. This exemplifies the certainty that once faced with the true significance of fitting in by means of blind devotion, and discovering individualistic expression, one will eventually shed the extraneous inclinations to integrate to a majority and therefore, find their way as an individual. Once Elizabeth is brought to testify to her husband’s confession, However, the falter in her voice is unmistakeable, representing the part of her that is reluctant still, to relinquish the hold that the Puritan community has on her views surrounding popular opinion. During the interrogation, Elizabeth is frozen; and “in a crisis of indecision she cannot speak”(113). The word “indecision” demonstrates an inability to make a decision, in this case reflecting a concealed incapacity to tell the truth. Elizabeth cannot yet bring herself to fully dislodge the pressures of the Salem society’s need for a perfect illusion. Subsequently she continues to struggle to masquerade as a obedient member of the masses, one without individual…

John’s conflicts have left him weaker than that he was before, and that weakness makes him depend on Mary Warren to reveal the truth about the witch trials in his place. Mary Warren would then accuse John Proctor of witchcraft. John is thrown into a dungeon and he is in a dilemma whether he should hang like a “saint”, or live with the guilt. In a conversation between Elizabeth and John Proctor, his inner struggle is shown, after Elizabeth says that she cannot judge him, “Then who will judge me? God in Heaven, what is John Proctor? I think it is honest, I think so; I am no saint. Let Rebecca go like a saint for me it is fraud!”(Proctor, Miller, IIII, 1100) Elizabeth then replies that she is not his judge, and to do as he will, to which John states, “Would you give them such a lie? Say it. Would you ever give them this? You would not if tongs of fire were singeing you you would not! It is evil. Good, then-it is evil, and I do it.”(Proctor, Miller, IIII, 1100) When John Proctor’s conflicts have been chosen he turns into a selfless…

Proctor’s hubris caused the problem in the first place and this led to his tragic flaw. Proctor believed that he was untouchable; he believed that he could have an affair, but as long as he apologized afterwards, everything would be all right again. But as the play unfolded he soon found out that his life with Elizabeth and life in the village would never be the same again. Proctor’s affair drove Abigail to plot to get Proctor’s wife Elizabeth out of the picture, so that she could take her place. But she was intelligent enough to realize that if she excused the wife of a well-respected man of the village of conspiring with the devil, no one would believe he and she would be thrown in jail for lying to the court. For she has broken the commandment “Thou shalt not bear false witness” and this was as serious a sin as murder. Because of this Abigail decided that if she filled the jails with people not so respected such as tramps no one would notice one more person passing through the courts. Abigail did all this because Proctor had slept with her. This caused her to believe that he made a promise to her by doing so; she believed that if Proctor did not have Elizabeth he would then love her instead. Because Proctor slept with Abigail he did not just cause his own downfall, but also the downfall of others. One thing Abigail did not think would happen and ruined her conspiracy was for Proctor to stand up in court, blacken his name in the village, risk being hanged, and expose her as a harlot she was. Proctor’s proof of this was his statement of “I have known her.” By doing this he ruined his reputation in the village, but Proctor realizes that his reputation was caused by the illusions people had of him and that he was a really a fake. This was one of the noblest things he done during the play when he tired to save others by destroying himself and was one of the turning points in the play. This also meant that…
