In the beginning of the story we see Granny Weatherwax, who is a highly regarded leader that the witches did not have, display acts of heroism. Even though she is soon approached by three riders who have come to assassinate the dead King’s now orphaned child, she displays acts of heroism by protecting a child that was just given to her in the middle of the night. The leader of the three assassins’ advises her to hand over the baby. However, being the stubborn woman that she is, she says no. She does this, because of the antagonist in the story, Lord Felmet, is tearing the village apart with his madness. She wants to make sure the baby will be old enough to reclaim the throne, without the evil Lord Felmet causing more havoc over the kingdom. The spell Granny wants to cast has never been done before, and even though she is highly regarded her second in command, Nanny, doubts that she will be able to accomplish such a feat. Nanny even goes as far as to compare her with a very powerful witch, Black Aliss. Granny does not let Nanny’s doubt sway her from her goal, just like she did not let Magrat’s doubts sway her either. She knows what the repercussions will be if she does not go through with the spell, so she manages to persevere and finish the task at
