Huckleberry is saying this to Aunt Sally because she believes he is Tom, and he knows he must get onto the Phelpses’ property one way or another in order to save Jim. He thinks impersonating one of the family members is the easiest way, and with the help of his quick thinking he goes along with it without hesitation. “‘I bet you can’t spell my name’” (p.99). Huckleberry says to Buck. He is trying to trick Buck into spelling his name because he can’t seem to remember the made-up name he had been using the day before. He dosen’t want this family to find out he has been lying, so with some quick thinking he finds a way to remember his name.
In conclusion, Huckleberry shows that he is clever in many ways throughout the book. A few ways in which he is clever is when he escapes from Pap, makes a cover story to fool Mrs. Loftus, and when he uses his quick thinking to remember his made-up name and find a way onto the Phelpses’ property. When Huckleberry is in a situation that causes trouble he uses his available resources and skills to avoid getting caught. It might seem like he is constantly in trouble, but he is clever enough to always find a way out of trouble without being
