Elizabeth…”(1099). This shows that he does not want to lie to the court and wants to confess and end the big mess that Abigal has caused. All in all, Miller shows that Procter is an honest man through his actions. Secondly, Miller shows that Procter is a caring soul. He often asks how people are doing, he asks Elizabeth “Are you well today?”(1047). This shows that Procter cares about his wife and her well being. Procter cares about how he treats people, and wants everyone who he cares about to stay safe during the trials throughout the play. Also Procter does not want to affect other peoples names or reputations, he implies this when he says,”I speak my own sins; I cannot judge another…”(1102). During the Red Scare, people were judging people left and right, but nobody thought of it like John Procter, he cares about how others feel and he doesnt want to put them in a bad position. In conclusion, Miller proves that Procter cares through his words and attitude towards others. Lastly, Miller presents John Procter as a respectful person.
This is one of Procter’s most important traits because it shows he not only cares for people, but he has respect of their values and posessions. Even when Procter is really mad, like in the scene with Reverend Hale and Rebecca Nurse, he still is respectful to them. When he says, “I mean it solemnly, Rebecca; I like not the smell of this authority.”(1036) he says it in a polite tone to Rebecca, while on the other hand he is very mad at the authority in Salem. Also, he makes room for other people, showing that he is respectful to Hale, he says, “... We are not used to visitors after dark, but your welcome here. Will you sit you down, sir?”(1055). When he says this he shows he is respectful by allowing Hale to come in, even though it was late, he doesnt want to turn people down. To wrap it up, Procter is a respectable person, and respects
others. Miller describes John Procter as respectful, caring, and brave to show that he is a good man with a good heart. Although Procter did not go to church and did not have his child baptized does not mean he is a bad person, like the people in the Puritan society believe he is. There are lots of people in this world who do not fit in to the rest of society, but that does not make them a bad person.
