In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe it is believed that Montresor actually planned the death of Fortunato.The readers believed that Montresor had the intention to kill Fortunato for his revenge. Even though Montresor’s plan was not directly said it was implied throughout the story. “The Cask of Amontillado” is packed with evidence showing that Montresor had carefully thought about every little detail that would lead to Fortunato’s death. But what was all the trouble for? All because of an insult that came from Fortunato. No one knows if Montresor overreacted or if the insult was truly bad, but it must have hurt Montresor deeply for him to plan with such specific steps and actually enjoy seeing the end of poor Fortunato.
Fortunato, was a respected and feared man but even he had a weakness. He was a drunk who enjoyed his wine way too much. Montresor took this weakness to his advantage knowing that Fortunato would have clouded judgement and would not be thinking clearly. When he found Fortunato drunk he shook his hand and acted like everything was okay. Montresor made it look like it was a coincidence that they had bumped into each other. Montresor mocks Fortunato purely for his own sick and twisted entertainment. Montresor makes it seem as he cares and is worried about Fortunato’s well being. He even says, “You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back; you will be ill, and I cannot be responsible. Besides, there is Luchesi --" . After this Montresor even cheers for Fortunato’s long life. As they keep walking Montresor leads Fortunato into a niche and chains him up against the wall with shackles. Fortunato is too confused and astonished to fight back and does not even completely process what was
