How Is Odysseus A Hero

The daily adventures of Odysseus are closely related to the lives of veterans who risk their lives each and every day. Odysseus and veterans are heroes that experience the consequences of life. Through their encounters, they are able to learn from those experiences and overcome their hardships. Odysseus possesses qualities are both beneficial and detrimental for his well being. The protagonist of The Odyssey is able use his cleverness and mischievousness by tricking Polyphemus while held captive in a cave. When Polyphemus asks Odysseus for his name, he replies, “Everyone calls me Nohbdy.” Odysseus and his men planned to blind Polyphemus when he was drunk and had fallen asleep, but were afraid of the other Cyclopes who roamed upon
They all gather outside his cave and frantically ask who has hurt him. Polyphemus answers, “Nohbdy has tricked me, Nohbdy’s ruined me!” Finally, the other Cyclopes misunderstand thinking he said “Nobody” and leave. Veterans are often communicating with individuals native to the city they are located in. Like Odysseus, these men and women are watchful for any suspicious activity and can make wise choices on how to handle those who are misleading them. On the battlefield, soldiers are also able manipulate those around them that may be harmful to their own wellness. However, the good qualities of Odysseus are balanced by his poor characteristics. For example, the pride of Odysseus gets the better of him when his shipmates demandingly yell, “Godsake, Captain! Why bait the beast again? Let him alone!”
