How is the Bilbo Baggins at the end of the novel different from the Bilbo Baggins in Chapter 1 in 'The Hobbit' by T.R. Tolkien?
Everyone changes, especially in a different environment with different people. Bilbo Baggins is a good example. He changed from a timid, predictable hobbit to a clever, decisive, brave, loyal, responsible hobbit; he also gained a lot of confidence.

His first change was when "something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go see The Great Mountains." It was then when he realized he wanted an adventure; he really did wanted to go see the mountains, but then 'he shuddered; and very quickly he was plain Mr. Baggins again'. He was interested, curious, and scared at the same time. When Bilbo heard that all of them may never return, he got so scared he screamed and fainted.

His second change was the encounter with the trolls. Even though it didn't seem that he changed a lot, he was braver, because he was the one who went first, he not only lead, he also managed to 'pick pockets'. He was also responsible because he thought of the dwarves, and loyal, because he didn't give them away. This shows that Bilbo is trying to overcome his fears .

His third change was the riddles with Gollum. He became much more decisive: "'Go back?' he thought. 'No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!'" From this I can tell that Bilbo became a much quicker thinker and faster at making decisions. He also became braver because even though he was afraid of Gollum, he still talked with him. He also won against Gollum, which is a big success for Bilbo, even though he did 'cheated' by not asking a riddle but a question, it still was a big success. He also very luckily, found the ring, which made him invisible to other living beings. He had an advantage because Gollum couldn't see him, therefore Bilbo got away successfully. The ring played a very important role throughout the journey; without the ring , Bilbo couldn't be possibly do a lot of tasks, like running away from Gollum or talking to Smaug without being seen, or rescuing the dwarves from the spiders and from the prisons of the Elvenking, therefore, Bilbo was extremely lucky to find the ring.

His fourth change was rescuing the dwarves from the spiders. This was a big change because Bilbo became even braver , and this time, he had to go single handed to rescue the dwarves even though he knew what would happens if he fails, proving that Bilbo is very loyal. He became cleverer by making a very quick and smart plan, but the plan was very risking, because if he gets caught, the whole adventure would fail, and not only that, the dwarves and Bilbo would get killed. This plan, once again, involved the ring. Bilbo made the spiders very angry first by singing songs that insults the spiders from a distance, then he steals his way back - by using the ring. He fought very bravely using rocks and his elvish blade. Even though the spiders outnumbered him and the dwarves, he still fought bravely.

His fifth change was when he rescued the dwarves from the Elvenking's castle. He did not get caught because he had the ring on, bur even so he thought of a plan to rescue the others out. He was very clever because he did not waste time, and he came up with a good plan. He spend his time exploring the castle and the prison, making sure he knew the place very well, then he checked what everyone did each day, so he can make sure they escape without being seen. At last he thought of a great plan. Even though the dwarves didn't like the very risky plan, they still trusted Bilbo and they escapes safely.

His sixth change, and one of Bilbo's greatest moments in the journey, was when he meets the dragon, Smaug. When they arrived at the doorstep, no one dared to go in expect for Bilbo. This I think, was a very brave move, because no one knew what the dragon would do, and no one expect Bilbo dared to go in. Balin did go with Bilbo, but only half way. Bilbo was facing the sum of all his fears, but he still has the guts to go in and meet Smaug. His very impressive and confident conservation also makes him more of a hero than a Burglar. He calls himself 'the clue-finder, the web-cutter, the stinging fly. I am he who walks unseen. I am the friend of bears and guests of eagles. I am the Ringwinner and the Luckwearer; and I am Barrel-rider' this is obvious he spoke with confidence, and also, he was speaking the truth, but it was more of a riddle. He flatters Smaug by calling him things like ' O Smaug the Tremendous' and ' Smaug the Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities ' or 'Smaug the Mighty'. He very cleverly made Smaug show his weak spot--Smaug's left chest, which was unprotected by armor.

His greatest sacrifice was using the Arkenstone to trade peace, even though he knew Thorin would be furious if he finds out. But he still traded the Arkenstone. This is a great sacrifice because the dwarves now respects Bilbo, they listen to all his opinions, and they are all very thankful because Bilbo had saved their lives more then once. Even though he kind of betrayed Thorin, he remained loyal to the dwarves. When he was offered a place to stay, he refused and stayed with Thorin.

I think that Bilbo had changed a lot as the story went on. He was a timid and predictable hobbit in chapter one. But during his one year long adventure, he gain more confidence, became braver, cleverer, and much more decisive.

Towards the beginning of the book, the dwarves do not have a very high opinion of the hobbit; though, as the book progresses, their opinion of Bilbo slowly grows. By the end, the dwarves have a high respect for Mr. Baggins. When Bilbo escapes from seemingly certain death or saves the group, the dwarves can see his bravery, strength, and intelligence that they thought he had none of. An example would include the time when Bilbo lost his way in the goblin cave, and he escapes what the dwarves picture as Bilbo’s certain demise. That confirms a prime reason that Bilbo proves himself qualified to lead the adventurers, but naysayers still remain.…

Every four years the United States enters the frenzy of election. Presidential candidates from multiple parties get ready for a campaign across the nation to gain popular support from both the delegates and the people. The presidential candidate not only has to win the popular vote, but also the majority votes in the Electoral College. The Electoral College serves to elect the president and the vice president of the United States. It is a form of indirect election which is opposed by many. Those who oppose the system fear that the Electoral College will allow the possibility of a minority president or a faithless elector, while people who argue in favor of the electoral system believe that Although the Electoral College is archaic and flawed, it is still currently the most sufficient form of election for the President; though changes may be made, it is unlikely that the entire system can be replaced.…

Let’s start with comparing the main characters, Bilbo and Beowulf. Bilbo was a small hobbit, “About half our height, and smaller than bearded dwarves” (Tolkein, 2) and Beowulf was a great big man with enormous strength, “He was the strongest of men alive in that day” (Beowulf, 180). Obviously they are total opposites. One big one small. One thing that is the same size though, is their hearts they both have big hearts and are brave. Beowulf is probably a tad bit more brave but Bilbo is close behind. Both characters set out on a quest or adventure. Beowulf to kill the dreaded beast Grendel and Bilbo to slay the notorious dragon Smaug. They are both very successful with the task that was presented ahead of them. Beowulf kills Grendel. Bilbo aids in the killing of Smaug and to regain the stolen treasure for his companion Thorin Oakenshield. The two heroes were not on their quests for the same reasons though. Beowulf had heroism for his reasoning on making the journey to Hrothgar’s kingdom to slay Grendel. Bilbo was kind of tricked into going on his adventure and had nothing but greed on his little hobbit mind. They got a lot more than they anticipated on their journeys. They both had to battle unexpected foes. Bilbo probably had the worst of the two. He had to battle trolls, goblins, Gollum, wargs, spiders, wood elves, and then on top of all those nasty creatures throw in a fire breathing…

This novel displays the benefits that can be gained from taking a step out of personal comfort zones. Bilbo was pushed from his comfort zone when Gandalf and the Dwarves looking to reclaim their mountain, came to add Bilbo to their party. During the adventure that followed, Bilbo was put into situations and conflicts that forced him to make quick decisions and take initiative in order to keep himself and the group alive. These are things that Bilbo had no experience with and where outside his usual activities. But because he was forced to do things he was not prepared for and where outside of his comfort zone, he grew as a person. He developed a solid basis of self-confidence, gained new experiences that changed his perspective of his world, and learned how to push through conflicts and difficulties through the use of creativity and quick-wittedness. When he returned to The Shire, his comfort zone had expanded form his neighborhood and the other hobbit's societal expectations, due to his rise in self-confidence and expanded perception of middle earth and it's inhabitants. At the beginning of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, Bilbo is extremely patient. In the beginning if the book, Gandalf arrives at the doorstep of the hobbit’s home, and is rather rude. However, Bilbo invites him to tea the next morning. Gandalf shows up with thirteen dwarves, but Bilbo doesn’t turn them away. The dwarves even taunted Bilbo and exploited his hospitality, singing, “Chip the glasses and crack the plates! Blunt the knives and bend the forks! That’s what Bilbo Baggins hates- smash the bottles and burn the corks!” (Tolkien 12). If Bilbo hadn’t been patient enough to invite the dwarves over, he would have never been sent on the unexpected journey. His patience sets up the rest of the…

Well, for one thing, he leaves his home to go on a wild adventure. He wasn't happy about traveling away from the Shire, and the dwarfs were frustrating, too. He took a bold step in trusting Gandalf, and was brave to leave all that food behind. But, he was brave, and along the way he proved useful to them all. He became a leader, a hero, and discovered that there is more to life than sitting at home with loads of food and tepid tea. Bilbo’s heroic deeds are all the more remarkable because they fail to change him. He discovers capabilities that had been unknown to him, but he does not become arrogant or relinquish his values. In his final conversation with Bilbo, Thorin acknowledges the value of the simple lives of hobbits, even in a world marked by grim heroism and danger. Though Bilbo learns to thrive in this outer world, he draws strength from the simple source that guided his heroic quest. His decision to return to Hobbiton toward the end of the novel indicates that, despite his newfound heroism, Bilbo has stayed true to himself all along.…

The final sense that I understood from the novel is that even if someone doesn’t seem like they are capable to complete something or act a certain way there is always hope or room for someone to grow. I say that this is a big part of the final part of the book is because Bilbo changes so much and grows so much as a hobbit then you would have expected him to. Another big thing that I took from the book is that if you were working together and not scared to ask for help from anyone you meet you will be able to reach the goal you were working towards or whatever you are trying to get to. If you are not afraid to ask for help the more likely you will complete whatever you are trying to.…
