The main reason that characters such a Prospero manipulate others is to gain control. If you can manipulate those with lesser knowledge then yourself. The character Prospero illustrates this within Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Through Prospero’s magic and clever speech his is able to manipulate and control what others do and think in certain situations.
Prospero often puts people on the island to sleep, “The strangeness of your story put Heaviness in me” Throughout the play, the induction to sleep is used many times by Prospero whenever he wants something to happen keeping the rest of the characters unaware of it. When the characters wake up they find themselves surprised however they often do not realise it is him putting them to sleep. Prospero is using his magic to control when certain people are awake or asleep, for example he is controlling them. Prospero also uses his way with words to manipulate people’s opinion which I will discuss further in.
One person that Prospero is able and uses his power over is his daughter Miranda. Prospero has a very strict control over Miranda which he enforces using magic and his father figure. He becomes especially controlling on matters like sexual relations and although he wants Miranda and Ferdinand to fall in love he keep a firm grip on her. Prospero loves having power and Miranda is one of the people on the island who he has much power over and can manipulate them into doing anything he wants. Moreover Prospero tells Miranda stories of how his greedy brother drove him out of Milan. These stories however are never proven and we have no idea whether they are completely accurate or not. However these stories allow Prospero’s actions to be deemed appropriate in Miranda’s view, thus the manipulation takes force in controlling Miranda’s opinions, for the first time.
