Over the centuries that maps have been created, they have changed by a lot, they have gotten some helpful tools such as BOLTS which has made understanding maps much easier. This essay will focus about the compass, the age of discovery, how the compass has made maps more accurate, how maps have changed over time and a comparison between an old map and a modern map.
Compass
The compass is a tool which has helped navigation greatly, it is a navigation tool which allows people to know what direction they are facing. The compass has a magnetized pointers. The compass has the four cardinal points North, East, South and West. Compasses are normally built in a standalone sealed instrument fashion, with a magnetised bar or needle which turns freely upon a pivot, or it is a moving fluid. The purpose of the compass is to point out what direction a person is facing depending on where the point is facing.

This era began with the Portuguese exploring the Atlantic Coast of Africa. which was started by Prince Henry. Prince Henry encouraged the use of the compass, as it would help navigation of the world,by using the north pole sailors would help mapmakers make more accurate maps of the sea. An important person in the age of discovery was Christopher Columbus. Columbus used the magnetic compass to help him when he used the navigation technique known as dead reckoning, which would be where the navigator sets one point for his journey for the day and then would set another point of his journey for another day.
