If the criminal truly believed that their actions were wrong, they would have never committed the act, but in the mind of a criminal they have justified their actions through a set of misguided beliefs. If an individual’s belief system is warped in small matters, it can only lead to the conclusion that it would be well outside the bounds of a normal response in a life or death situation. In the movie there were two important times where religious imagery plays a role in Dr. Stone’s predicament. In the first instance she is hurled into space by a debris storm that wrecked her ship, and she must now find a way to return to earth. In the first half of the movie, Dr. Stone is scared and alone, she is without hope, no religious imagery exists for her to seek reassurance from. It is impossible to believe that the earth is both flat and round at the same time. This is of course logical, as they are contradictory statements, a choice must be made. Science and religion are often at odds, as they both are seeking answers to questions about the universe. However, science and religion are not independent, they coexist to seek answers. Throughout ancient and modern times scientists have held both scientific and religious views. In the early days of the Catholic church, some of the best scientists were employed by the church. Science and religion do coexist, it is like eating both apples and oranges, some people may only eat one or the other, but in general most people like to eat both. In the first half of the movie Dr. Stone is very serious and scientific, but as the movie progresses Dr. Stone’s faith starts to play an important role. In a scene, Dr. Stone sees light outside of her window, symbolizing her belief that she can make it home. While Dr. Stone is starting to believe in a higher power she still needs science to work correctly to get her home. Dr. Stone said, “Either I am going to splash down and live or burn upon reentry, no harm no foul!” Once Dr. Stone landed successfully on the earth she embraced the sand and said, “thank you.” This phrase is significant in the movie as she was continually talking to someone or referenced someone that was not present in the physical
