How Mrs. Nguyen Changed My Life
Everyone gets the chance to meet many people in their lives, but there is a memorable person who helped you become the character you are. I may have met this person not too ago preparing myself for high school, but my counselor Mrs. Nguyen was a major driving force in helping me become myself again. Without a counselor who was willing to be patient and assuring during my time of weakness, I would have certainly destroyed my high school career and potentially my future. Before meeting Mrs. Nguyen for the first time, my final year in middle school was a major decay compared to my previous years. I was struggling emotionally and mentally, feeling like at times I was going to burst into tears and constantly calling myself a failure. My grades suffered tremendously as well, barely passing with D’s and C’s and saying my parents were disappointed was an understatement. 8th grade was definitely one of my worst time periods in my life. Depending on the grades you earn will determine the school you can go and what future you will be able to achieve. Mrs. Nguyen became my counselor and I was able to see her more often. Freshmen year was an improvement compared to 8th grade, as this time I was able to pass my classes and feel some comfort of success. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for my sophomore year, as once again I started becoming depressed, mainly from the amount of stress I was feeling with the amount of classes and work I had. My grades and mentality dipped down once more, and Mrs. Nguyen was upset at my downward spiral. There was a point in time where I was angry at her for yelling at me. Eventually I told her about my problems, of how I was suffering with depression, my confidence was low, and how my mentality worsens every time I fail at

I dreaded the alarm that woke me up at 6:30 in the morning. It was as loud as a screaming toddler that could be heard for miles. I groggily got out of bed and got ready for my first day of school. It was a weird feeling not putting on a uniform like I had been for the past nine years, but I also enjoyed that freedom. The nervousness became more and more intense as I could closer and closer to campus. When we arrived, I got out of the car, and watched my dad drive off to go take my younger sister to school. There was no going back now; I had no other choice than to walk through those doors. I felt like my throat was in my stomach. I noticed some familiar faces, and I walked towards them. While I was approaching my friends, a senior, facing toward me, walked passed. He must have been at least six feet tall, which was incredibly intimidating for me at just over five feet. I was not used to the fact that I’d potentially have classes with these giants. Additionally, the array of new teachers, and having to learn all of their teaching styles and things they did or did not tolerate was hard in…

counselor. For all of us, it is a lifelong process” (Journal of counseling and development, 2006 p. 116. Vol. 84). When thinking about the characteristics of a counselor, I think about the qualities I would seek in a person that I would like to have as a friend or confidant: Patience, empathy, a good listener; conversely, well versed and skilled in their area of expertise, life experience and ethics/values. Counselors work closely and intimately with individuals and have to maintain appropriate boundaries while balancing the ability to establish trust and empathy. “ An effective counselor is one who works with clients to produce a positive outcome, a positive change in the…

Growing up, I did not have too many positive influences in my life, I never had anybody to look up to until I met her. My supervisor served as mentor, big sister and friend all in one. She led by example and possessed all the qualities I wished to have. Even though my supervisor worked over 25 hours a week and was enrolled in a full-time graduate program in Rutgers, she always went out of her way to get to know me personally and shared her experiences with me. As my supervisor, she knew my strengths, weaknesses, and my abilities. During times where I felt like giving up, she pushed me to discover more about my own capabilities and my potential. We would schedule study sessions together and had bi-weekly one-on-one meetings where we were able to discuss academics and social life. She shared her skills and knowledge and provided constructive feedback. In turn, it is essential for me to work with students, I want to empower them in order to make college a positive experience despite any obstacles they might encounter along the…

On the first day of seventh grade, I met the woman who changed my behavior and view on school. That day, in my supplemental skills class, I wasn’t following anything that my teacher said and she noticed. She called me to her desk and started to have a conversation with me. She knew me, but I had no idea who she was other than the name on the plaque. She said she was the head of a camp that I used to go to and that my…

In life there is always a person, or role model that you will look up to and admire. A person may admire their role model, or mentor, because of their looks, wit, or even general personality. No matter who you are there is always someone that you attempt to emulate in some way, shape, or form throughout your life. There is no limit to the amount of role models one person can have. There may only be one person whose ideas you look at and agree with whole heartedly, or you may take portions from a vast number of others in order to create your own unique persona, and ideas. School always came first, without a doubt. But, I let the move get to me. I let change get to me, and that shouldn’t have been the case.Doing my best is what I should have kept doing, but that wasn’t what happened.. My uncle is the person that made me realize that. He’d always call to check up on me, making sure I was doing the best that I could without any excuses. He called one day and asked how I was doing in my new school, and I told him the truth. His response was nothing I was prepared for. I was used to him telling me how proud he was of me, and that I’m going to set out to be the greatest at what I want to become. But, this phone conversation was not anything I thought it would be.He said, “Even though I hoped this wouldn't happen, I knew it would.” What did that even mean? Did it mean he was rooting for my failure? That talk sparked something in me. It reignited my passion for success. I started to get my act together and refocus on my grades, and what I wanted in life. Slowly my grades started improving, with each semester slightly getting…

We envision the potential in all people and utilize that potential to watch others succeed in their own lives. Counselors can work by themselves and recharge their batteries, though it’s been proven that they function best in a group. I’m believe I am a counselor since I attempt to be a genuine listener and am truly interested in helping people with their personal issues. I’m not a leader, on the other hand, I love working in close-knit team groups, doing all I can behind the scenes. In high school, I was never a leader actress in a school play, yet I loved the behind the scenes work I contributed to. Counselors are quite rare and often difficult to find, when a person encounters them, they are difficult become acquainted with as they are private on their innermost personal thoughts or their powerful emotional reactions, except with those truly close to them. People in my life have been shocked to find different sides to my complex self. I have strong values, yet at times I find myself confused with myself. Counselors are highly intuitive and can recognize another's emotions or intentions--whether congenial or malicious intent--even before that person is aware of them. Often I’m not even sure how I am able to read or feel others in such a deep, intimate way. I’ve been called…

A person who has had a significant influence on me in my life would have to be my former foster mother, Miss Barbara Pratt. Ms. Pratt was a foster mother to many children before myself and she had had wonderful success with most of them. I had been in an extremely abusive relatives home before I had been placed in Ms. Pratt’s home. When it was discovered that I was in an abusive home I was first placed in a group home in Cincinnati. Social Services worked very hard to find me a home that would help me adjust to a ‘normal’ life as quickly and easily as possible. They found the home my older sister had been placed in, they contacted Ms. Pratt and I was placed in her care.…

Reflecting through my school years, I think back to all the influences who helped shape and mold the person I am today. Everything from proper nouns to common courtesy…It was all laid out for me. One teacher that impacted me from day 1 was my junior year Chemistry teacher, Mrs. Kang. She was an amazing teacher who truly left her imprints on not only my education, but my heart. At first Chemistry was a bit challenging after a constant effort she suggested that I come in daily for before and after school tutoring. I took Mrs. Kang up on her offer and after daily sessions I began to not only improve my Chemistry work, but throughout the time with her I began slowly opening up. After consistent deep and open conversations we discussed everything from my personal life to my educational path. She was taken back that my thoughts on high school were where they were at. In a way disappointed that my view of grades nine through 12 were a complete joke. I felt that it didn’t matter and College was the bigger picture. I also mentioned that school in my opinion wasn’t my thing. She immediately corrected me informing me that I was actually quite the intellectual one and that I could do anything I put my mind to. After that conversation my Chemistry grade immediately sky rocketed. She had given me that confidence boost I clearly needed. After succeeding in one of my classes I thought back all of my school years. Not just the years but my complete educational path. Through out middle school we were each implanted with the motto “ Believe, Achieve, Succeed.” After thinking back, it all clicked. I had slacked off and pushed everything so far back that I had completely forgotten what I truly knew and what I was so clearly capable of. I had doubted myself for years all for nothing. The potential was there it was just all on me. Once I had applied myself to Chemistry, my grade went up. Once my grade was where I wanted it I realized I had a passion for Chemistry. I…

But the one person that I admire the most my grandmother. She was a great woman and one that held on in times of turmoil, she taught me to be strong and if I have to cry go ahead.
