Since the start of the 21st century the amount of technology and the use of it has increased exponentially. Today technology in the form of computers, tablets and smartphones is used in almost everything we do. We watch Netflix, we plan travels and we even pay for the groceries at the supermarket with these metal boxes. Our whole life is therefore centered around 10 to 20 different elements that create these machines. This assignment will analyze and comment on Larry Rosen’s article “How much technology should you let your child use” from 2013. The assignment will focus how Rosen argues for his views and on his intention.
How much technology should you let your child use? The article’s title is very significant in telling what the article’s content deals with. Rosen has written the article based on two articles, that both questions the amount of time a child should be allowed to watch a tablet, and a new invention; Ipotty. An invention that allows children to watch an iPad while potty training. Extreme cases that show just how young children are when they are left to technology. The warrant is backed by scientifical facts: “Our brains have a specialized mechanism.” Rosen’s backing confirms his claim since: if science says it, it must be true as science operates under a lot of ethos. Furthermore, Rosen also uses rebuttal to strengthen is argumentation. This is visible through is doubts: “Is this bad for our children?” He is having doubts whether is claim is true or false which is why his conclusion becomes the middle way between technology and no-technology.
