In my early years, 2-10 years, I mainly listened to a lot of pop music, for example: The Black Eyed Peas, Michael Jackson, Maroon 5, etc. I would imagine myself being the singer, the guitarist, or the drummer. By the time I was 10 years of age, I began to form an interest in instruments and beats and all the rhythms. It was then when I decided I wanted to learn to play instruments.
In my teenhood, 11-14(current age), I began to learn to play instruments. When I was 11 years of age, I would still listen to pop music. It was during that stage when I started to learn to play instruments. I started out with the …show more content…
acoustic guitar and practiced for about a year.
After practicing and practicing, I told myself that the guitar was not the instrument. It wasn't because I did not like an instrument, but because I wasn't able to play it and I couldn't reach the notes. At age 12, I began to listen to more funky, rock and roll, and electronic music like: Daft Punk, Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Fall Out Boy, and Coldplay. Now at age 14, I still listen to the same type of music when I was 12 with an addition of hip-hop and rap. One artist who has greatly influenced me now is rapper J Cole with his song “No Role Modelz”. The meaning behind the song is, behind all his obstacles and living in a tough neighborhood with a harsh childhood and no one to look up to, being daunted by the life he was living, he was still able to be successful despite all odds against him. He isn’t like other modern-day rappers that are pompous and egocentric about all their opulence. He just writes what's true to him.
I really admire that about him, which shows that anything is possible and I can do it too. I would listen to his songs and notice something they all had in common. They all had a strong drum in the background. I was able to hear the snare drum, bass, hi hats, crash, and many more. I would follow the beat in my head and count the rhythms. That’s when I decided to learn to play the drums. At my church youth group, there’s a band called The Encounter, so I went to the drummer and started taking lessons with him. I have been taking lessons with him for 2 years already and has made a big impact in my life. I currently play in The Encounter Band at my church and my favorite song to play is “Satisfy”. I hope to continue on playing with them for as long as I can.
At the end of my life, I would like the music I would listen to to be played. Something like Coldplay “Adventure of a Lifetime” or some J Cole. I wouldn’t like them to play some sorrowful music at my funeral. I don’t want them to be upset for me, but to be delighted for the life I lived.
In conclusion, music has greatly impacted me and without it, I don’t know where I’d be in my life.
