How Optimism Effects My Community

A Smile A Day, Keeps The Challenges Away
As a child, I was taught to smile at everyone I would meet. A smile is like the common cold, easy to exchange between people and affects a person for little while. My Community has used my optimism in a beneficial manner. This is shown through my ambition to teach others, the optimism I have for dramatic arts, and through dedication to an annual school fundraiser that raises money for the Rwanda Foundation. Since first entering the educational system, I was inspired by this institution to learn, grow, and eventually teach others who need it most.
My optimism for education, and volunteering to tutor, benefits those of my community. By tutoring, I get this sense of happiness as my tutee looks at me as I explain something and says “Oh! I get it now.” Ambition rises within me to want to teach them. The more help that is given to them, the more they understand, and this gives them confidence in order to excel in their education. Last semester, I helped a student who had an average of 55%. He needed help in every subject – even though I was only expected to help in English. I had talked to my tutee and learned he was a visual learner. I devised a plan to draw diagrams in order to help him understand what he studied in class. His overall average was brought to 79%. By listening to my tutees and giving them a chance to tell me their problems I help them excel. They see my excitement about getting to know them and furthering their knowledge to benefit the community when it is needed. The love for education ties with my love for the dramatic arts – the show must go on with inspiration and excitement!
The children of my community’s drama school have been blessed with my positive attitude toward dramatic arts. For nine years I participated in the community’s drama fundraisers and annual winter/spring productions. By helping I learned a lot about the importance of being personable and learned the art of persuasion. Two years ago, I was given a stage-managing position for a child’s production for actors/actresses between eight and thirteen years old. During rehearsals, I would help them improve on their roles and presentation through fun acting exercises- for example “Party Quirks”. My lead actress learned to project her voice and learn her character perfectly. By giving these children the opportunity to learn by adding fun into the equation. Those in the community came to see the production, were overwhelmed by my actor’s talents. I taught my actor’s that they use their talents to teach people lessons in life- they really use there full potential with a bit of effort and positive attitude. Using your full potential is beneficial not only to your self; by using it you can work together to help others for the greater good- as I do for Rwanda foundation.
By joining the Rwandan Pilgrimage Committee with my optimism, I have benefited my community. Annually, my school holds pilgrimage committee to raise funds to rebuild the Rwandan nation after the 1994 genocide. Our rivalry school does a similar fundraiser – but for Haiti instead. For three years I have been a positive, and active member of the committee. I got others involved in extra curricular programs to make posters, commercials, and think of ideas to get others involved. I even helped with designing last year’s assembly to get students motivated. Lastly, by coming together as two schools, we learned about teamwork. Motivation has brought both schools together to realize that it takes more then one person to make a difference in our world. I got people to use their talents to benefit a mattering cause. For an event, I brought people together without complications- each person became a puzzle piece that made a beautiful picture. With an optimistic demeanor, anything can be accomplished with the right tools- and that is what I learned throughout these challenges of life.
In closing, my optimism has benefited my community. Through my ambition to teach others I gave peers the opportunity to succeed in life. My optimism for dramatic arts taught those children that their talents are beneficial and showed my community that children can accomplish greatness. Lastly, I brought students of the community to work for a greater cause using positivity. I believe that a positive perspective on life can change us as people completely. Conclusion? Wake up with a smile every morning; that day may have opportunity lying around the corner.
