Iago is a very well known character and at the same time very mysterious, people often argue over why Iago does what he does but if you pay close attention to the play a very supported reason stands out that helps explain the nature of Iago. Multiple times in literature characters are evil simply because they are and maybe to someone who does not pay attention, Iago is one of those people with the multiple times he screws over Othello and Desdemona but in reading the play with open eyes and ears you can see the little bits of evidence scattered throughout the play. It is evident when Iago talks to Othello …show more content…
and tells Othello to be wary of the green eyed monster which we know as jealousy, Iago speaks of it as if he’s had deep experience with it. Talking with Othello, Iago also talks about about how he has never met a man who loved himself, including him subtly hinting that Iago hates himself. When Iago’s wife Emilia talks there is evidence in her words she has had experience with a jealous husband, she tells Desdemona to beware of jealous husbands and near the end of the play Emilia starts figuring out Iago has been telling Othello all these things because she has seen it before, she has experienced it with her own husband as evident by her conversations with Desdemona. Iago is a jealous man throughout the play who slyly hates himself and wants Othello to experience what he has experienced in the past.
Othello the character people would call unstoppable and invincible due to his life experiences with winning freedom and fighting in all the wars.
There is a lot of talk and past tales about how Othello is so physically strong and unstoppable. Well the stories of Othello’s past may have won over Desdemona his wife but there is no stories of Othello’s mental state, they all explain how physically strong and confident he is but not how strong and confident he is mentally why? That would be because strong Othello over there truly is not that strong yes in war he can kill everyone alone and not worry about it clearly explained by the stories he tells Barbantio. After Othello and Desdemona get married and are headed for Cyprus Barbantio drops a line that sticks with Othello subcutaneously throughout the entire play, he goes on to tell Othello to beware his daughter, Desdemona because she has once deceived her father so she could deceive him one day. This line is important because Othello as we can see just blows it off but it also plants the roots for Iago to step in and create all the false thoughts in his head. Evidence of this is seen when Iago deceives Othello simply by stating he does not like cassio near Othello’s wife, now any simple person would think nothing of that but in Othello’s head all this does is water those seeds Desdemona's father planted before they sailed. Iago continues to water this plant in Othello’s mind by providing fake evidence which Othello takes to …show more content…
be true. The plant in his mind becomes a full blown tree of fake lies and jealousy when he hears a confession from Cassio and sees cassio with his lady's handkerchief what started as a simply line from his wife's father twisted and turned into pure, complete anger and jealousy thanks to some simple deceiving from Iago. This tree in Othello's mind inspires him to kill his wife for she is cheating on him and that cleary is what he needs to do, or so he believes. Othello realizes after being inspired to kill his wife and following through with that action he has been deceived by Iago, everything Iago told him and helped with was just to screw Othello over but it was his action to listen and follow Iago, Othello has to take responsibility for his action and not blame it on Iago because of course Othello chose to listen and follow Iago those were his actions.
Emilia is the strongest character in the play, the most brave and the most courageous, Emilia stands up for what she believes.
Her actions cause her to be the strongest, her actions cause her to be the smartest. Throughout the play Emilia says little but her words and Iago's help readers see what Emilia's past has been like when Iago talks about the green eyed monster you can tell he relates to it which we know then that Emilia has had experience with jealousy if her husband was once jealous. We also know from Emilia's talks with Desdemona that she has experienced jealousy. There is evidence in the play showing how Iago and Emilia’s marriage may not be the best, the way Iago treats her when they are in bed and Emilia has the handkerchief for him. We can see that Emilia’s marriage was possibly abusive in past due to the way she talks about jealous husbands with Desdemona. All the past stuff she has suffered through with Iago makes her see and understand what is happening when Iago deceives Othello into killing his wife. She is the only one that sees and realizes what has happened because she has the experience with it. Emilias past also helps her stand up for herself in the end of the play she is sick of being mistreated and ignoring things that are wrong so she stands up for herself and just schools othello and Iago, her past helps her be the one and only character that actually stands up for herself. It is because of her actions and past that she is the strongest and
smartest, yes Othello and everyone else may be physically stronger but Emilia is the only one to stand up for herself and figure out what has happened. Othello explains to us how past actions and experiences shape a person's future, skills and makes them smarter in cases. Evidently shown through Othello, Iago and Emilia.
