Phobias and Fear and how they affect The Bahamas
On television, today a show call “Fear Factor” displays fears as a joke or some form of entertainment where people were challenged to perform many of terrifying and/or disgusting stunts, from driving a dangerous course to eating something nasty. On social media people, also display acts of frightening someone with something they are afraid of as joke. Everyone is afraid of something and not everyone would admit to it, but everyone has at least one phobia or fear and we should take something like this seriously. Basically, a Phobia is being extremely afraid of a specific object, situation or activity. Phobias can limit a person’s life experience, in The Bahamas individuals experience fears when certain situations happen. This essay will examine the type of Phobias, causes, symptoms and treatment
Phobias are fears caused by certain situations that can interfere with a person’s handling capabilities or lead them to stay away overall. Generally, phobias can be dangerous or frightening, but people with phobias experience strong feelings of anxiety when they find themselves in settings. Phobias can be categorized into several different types. According to mental health America there are 3 main groups specific or simple phobias, social Phobias and agoraphobia. A simple phobia is types of intense fears of certain things or situations such as fear of animals or environmental fear. Causes of phobias seems to run in families, studies have shown that genes may play a character in some cases. In other cases, anxious family members may innocently teach others to be fearful. Other studies said the part played by the body's fear response which is rooted in a part of the brain. In people with phobias a scary experience even one involving a harmless situation, can create a deeply imprinted memory of fear. In October 2016, many Bahamians experienced a great horror with Hurricane Matthew, many homes and other valuables were destroyed for many residences. This may not cause a phobia but it could cause a massive fear on Bahamians especially those who were going through a rough time prior the event. If there were to be another immense tropical storm many would be in larger fear, worried about everything that could happen to them again or make matters worse which can also cause anxiety. With the help of the brain this memory can trigger an automatic fear response when similar situations come up again even if the fear is unjustified. In my research, I came across a Bahamian male who has an absolute phobia of flying which is called aerophobia. This young male experienced and discovered this fear as child while traveling with a relative from one country to another, having to be put on sedative to reduce the irritability of flying. He now lives in the U.S and still suffers with this phobia. Adults and children who move to countries
