Making a shoe by hand used to take a longer time but today's automatic toe laster can last 1,200 pairs in a 8-hour day(Kelly). Since more shoes have been made “Average American woman own 30 pairs of shoes, they spend average $300 on footwear every year and 60% of them regret at least one of their shoe purchases”(Wuyt). Back when they made shoes by hand it took them forever to make each pair everyday and now we have machines that do it for us. The national average of shoes owned is 19 pairs per person, that is many more than when shoes were first being created. It seems as if people are “collecting pairs like kids with baseball cards”(Fernandaz). Also, the shoes that are being now are “astroturf-soled sandals, flip-flops with beer bottle openers in the sole, Crocs, [and] toe-separator running shoes”(Dennis). When shoes were first invented it was discovered that “wearing shoes changes the way humans walk and how their bodies distribute weight”(Koerth). Another problem we experience is that when we wear tight shoes it can lead to bunions, which are painful(Baker). We’ve had to create new styles of shoes, as time went on our bodies changed and we don’t walk the same, lift heavy things or climb nearly as much. Though it has evolved over thousands of years, the human foot is still vulnerable to environmental hazards such as sharp rocks and hot grounds, which, shoes can protect against. The civilizations “were doing more walking, climbing, and carrying than we do today”(Baker). Due to footbones being smaller, they had to change the sizes and shapes(Baker). Our feet have changed over the years and so it was necessary to change around designs in order to make them comfortable and suitable for all activities. Shoes changed because the activities we do nowadays are different and the shape and size of our feet have
